@ LHR On 24 Oct

Wed Oct 22, 2003 5:44 am

I will probably go to LHR to watch the triple Concorde landings in the afternoon. Anybody? http://www.concordesst.com is reporting arrangements for the North runway to be in use. But which direction? Hopefully 27R.

Well, I'm not too sure if I'll attend, with all these rumours about the police etc. etc.

Paulianer/Rotate: Any chance that I could call you on your mobiles on the 24th, say at lunchtime to find out what the actual situation is on that day?

Not sure that the Police are telling people not to go - simply advising that traffic will be horrendous and advising people to stay away if they don't want to be stuck in it. However, this is a big event and nobody will get any hassle from the Police - this isn't the USA after all (only joking before you start on me)!

Well I'm going to defend the Police.
Anyone seen the truly insane 'driving' of people looking to see a Concorde? Stopping dead on the busy roads, blocking entrances, bus stops, I've seen all this in a matter of a few minutes.
What about all the cars parked out on busy roads that have and lot of bus and HGV traffic, I surprised that there has not been a bad accident already.
Then security, imagine what a job they have securing one of the UK's most obvious targets which happens to be a very busy airport as well.
And some people by trespassing makes it all worse.
What about pax who have to get on a flight (which is what LHR is for, it's not an airshow), what about the 1000's who have to get into work there.
If you must go, use public transport.
Co-operate with what LHR and the police tell you to do.
otherwise you'll spoil it for everyone.

I will be there, and I will be using public transport because I know the roads will be horrendous. The 09's are being used at the moment Sad, yesterday was a nice change when they used the 27's, I hope they will use the 27's for Friday.

I must agree in part with what GDB said-I was under the 09L approach and then at Hatton Cross on Saturday evening and the apalling behaviour and stupidity of a minority of people almost spoiled it for everyone. the police were tolerant as much as possible but it is no wonder they are being paranoid about Friday if last weekend was anything to go by.

Double parking on a dual carriageway

Parking on the central reservation (median strip)

Stopping dead in the single lane road from T4 to Hatton Cross

Parking in front of emergency access gates

and that is just some of the stuff that was going on......

for those of you driving

The road that is opposite the access to LHR at the eastern end Holiday Inn on the corner, has no restriction parking along it.
ALSO the holiday Inn allows 2HRS FREE parking..... the bad news is then its a tenner, but the good news is that that the BA base s a 10 min walk

I'm going on the tube to Hatton Cross and then will walk. I'm just worried Concorde will switch runways at the last minute. That has happened to me before.

So 27R it will be then? Well I can anticipate the masssive crowds that will be there for the event. The best advice is - go early and get a good spot and do not move! Also, please co-operate with the police if need be. Let us not mar this special occasion with bad behaviour.

Public transport is the way to go, driving there is certainly a n0-no...

Well just heard on the 6PM news here in the UK that people are already starting to camp out around Heathrow in preparation for tomorrows flights.
Whilst I agree that Heathrow is an airport not an airshow, if you are going to fly 3 Concordes in on it's last day of service, then you would expect a large crowd, and I would have thought they would have made some provision for them. After all they do not mind disrupting people when there are parades through London.
I saw the first commercial flight on TV and as much as I would like to see the last flight for real, I suppose I will have to watch it on TV, a shame after being part of it's crew for 22 years

But don't worry be happy

I just got back from LHR, G-BOAG gave us a wonderful noisy take off to JFK that was breathtaking to watch.

Unfortunately once again people were putting themselves at risk by ripping up police cordons and parking on the grass verge at Hatton Cross, the situation on the A30 by the BP garage was insane-the grass verges were full so people just started parking on the road and turning a dual carriageway into a single lane road.

But I must commend the police for their tolerance throughout the day, particularly the guys who were on duty at the perimeter crossing point when it was time for G-BOAG to cross the road. They allowed us to take pictures through the gates (which we are not supposed to do) and politely asked us to move before the gates were pulled back, after Concorde had crossed she stopped dead in her tracks in a great position for some last pictures for about 5 minutes and once again the police let us stand where we are not supposed to so that we could shoot like mad.

Well done!!
