LY 744 W/o LY Title?

Wed Oct 22, 2003 10:45 pm

While boarding my flight last night in TLV, I noticed one of LY's 744's had the "El Al" title missing from the sides of the ac and the "Shield of David" missing from the tail. The plane still had the blue-gray swirly stripes, which IMHO still ID's it as an LY plane - so why would they get rid of the titles? I'm sure it was a 744 (though couldn't make out the reg). Did they get a new 744? What gives?

I was also surprised to see a photo on A.net of a 744 without the titles and the star......
It's the first time I see this with the new livery.

With the old livery, the titles and the Israeli flag were removed when the planes were not flying El Al flights but were for instance operating for Arkia; since the introduction of the new livery, however, there were El Al planes seen flying even on Saturdays with the "whole" livery (although they were obviously not operating El Al flights...).
So I ignore the reason, but what you saw was for sure a 744 since no 742 has been painted in the new livery.

I bitterly miss the livery that should never have been changed (repetition...)

4X-ECB, a 777-200 is also in this "no-titles-no-tail-logo" livery:

The reason (as much as i know) is because
this two planes are flying "SUN-DOR" charter flights over the weekends.
cockpit? it's that little room in the front of the plane where the pilots seat.. but that's not important now

Nope, I dont think it's due to Sun'Dor, LY have operated Sun'Dor charters before with their usual scheme, I have also seen an old cls EL AL 742 with titles and star removed

Could it be that the titles are removed because of security concerns? In other words: if Israeli planes are less recognizable as such, they are less likely to be attacked. And we know that unfortunately they are indeed the targets of terrorist attacks, like the Arkia 757 that had SAMs fired at it in Kenya.

Just an idea right off the bat. Does anybody know for sure?

nope..
it couldn't be.

the LY livery is just as recognizable this way.

the 742's were flying this way when they were flying cargo (Saturdays..)
and usually only the comby's or freighters. (AXH, AXG (crashed 1992) AXF etc.)

an EL AL 772 captain told me it's for the sun dor ops today.
