Question On Removing Titles From Liveries

Sun Oct 26, 2003 12:46 am

Hi all

I was wondering why airlines sometimes remove their titles and flags from their planes. Like this El AL 777 without the Star of David and the tiltles

I've also seen an Air Zimbabwe BAE146 without flag, titles and logo

So I just want to know why some airlines do this
Politics?
Or just a repaint?

Im fairly sure its political. Such as British Asia Airways, Air FFrance Asia and Swissair Asia, they altered their titles slightly to allow the governments to let them serve their countries. Maybe someone with more knowledge can provide a better explanation.

I saw that aircraft @ LHR on Friday (the day the photo was taken) and I instantly recognised it as to EL AL.

I've also seen this done when an aircraft goes into short-term charter. Spirit does this with aircraft chartered to the US Marshall's service. When they come back, they may continue to fly without marks until they get to the paint/decal shop.

Probably the most extensive title removal ever witnessed was after the break-up of Aeroflot. All airlines had the Aeroflot titles removed and the red flag of the USSR repainted in their new national colours.
The new national airlines didn't have their own c/s so they left the aircraft for some while with the basic Aeroflot colours but with no titles.

Here is one example: An Armenian Airlines IL-86

Could be a hybrid scheme, an aircraft leased from one airline to another?

I think in El Al's case it could be more of a safety issue(i.e. to prevent aircraft from being shot down by terrorists since they may not be sure it is an El Al plane) Just a thought of mine, I dont know this for a fact.
