Both UA and AA ran them from DTW to ORD several times a day, and back then they did a full beverage service, unlike what other airlines now do. i.e. DL's fast break or whatever it is called.

Pre-deregulation domestic routes in the US used to get all kinds of widebody service, I guess the airlines were all subsidised and had to provide a certain level of service in return. I know Buffalo used to get quite a few AA DC10s (Detroit, O'Hare, La Guardia et al) and Jax getting a 747 (!) but the NW DC10 to Billings and Great Falls is a new one on me. Wish I had a time machine.

My first ever DC10 trip was on UA from YVR to SEA waaay back in 1976 - must have been all of 45 mins but it was a thrill for me at the time being on such a monster !

I had flown MAN/YVR on a Wardair B707 the "Punch Dickens" where the meal service was filet mignon and for IFE we had Bingo !

I can remember at the YVR departure gate there was a huge illuminated seating plan which I`m sure was for a Western Airlines DC10, they would illuminate the seat rows during the boarding process... quite techy for those long gone days  Smile

Took many of those DTW-ORD trips myself on DC10's. Used to be $44 roundtrip with no Sat. night stay required. You could fly to ORD, take the train downtown and spend the day in Chicago for a small amount of money. I miss that!!

How does Chicago-Detroit qualify as a weird DC-10 route?

Los Angeles-El Paso-San Antonio-Houston-Miami-Houston-San Antonio-LAX
DC-10 pub service during the mid 70s into the early 80s

Sun Country:

I saw the title to this one, and immediately thought the northwest one from jfk-ord-bil-gtf that is mentioned in the first one. That would be different. I live in Billings, and I don't think I have ever seen a DC-10 here. Those were the days!

I think UA also ran a DC-10 from PDX to SEA, and then on to HNL. Not sure about that...flight 33. I know they ran it with a DC-8.

In Sept 1975 there were 5 daily DTW-ORD roundtrips on the DC-10 - 1 each on UA and AA and 3 on NW.

Besides AA flying a DC-10 from DTW to BUF, they also flew one from DTW to SYR. Hard to believe.

In Sept 1975, NW flew DC-10's from MSP to ORD --- 6 times a day.

NW also flew 2 daily DC-10's from GEG (Spokane, WA.) to MSP.

It's sure nice to have a Sept. 1975 OAG.

The D10 flights from Chicago to Billings and Great Falls were actually continuing on to Seattle. The routing went something like NY-ORD-BIL-GTF-SEA. There were also flights from MSP-BIL-GTF-SEA on a D10.

National Airlines was all widebody DC10 between the New York area airports and Florida cities for a while - thus LGA/EWR/JFK-MIA/FLL/PBI/MCO/TPA were all widebody; of course, the frequencies were far less than they are now. NA also had DC10s flying routes like MIA-TPA-MSY-IAH-LAX, etc. NW flew DC10s on several unsual routes, such as the busy ORD-MSP flights as well as routes such as MSP-SPO as well as the Great Falls/Billings flights that are mentioned above. Western's short lived HNL-ANC-LGW flight (operated with a DC-10-10) also was quite odd.

When AA first started the RDU hub, routes such as RDU-LGA/BOS/MCO/MIA had one or more flights per day operated with DC10s.

I have an old June 1980 NW Timetable in front of me
Flight 71 DC-10 from EWR - DTW - ORD - BIL - GTF - GEG - SEA
7 flights a day from GEG - SEA - 4 of them were DC-10's
DC-10 from MSP - Winnipeg

Also,
747 from JFK-SEA (Continuing on to NRT)
747 from MSP - DTW - JFK - Europe

My favorite DC 10 route was LAM's weekly flight from MPM to CDG in the late eighties. The flight lasted ten hours.

National had a lot of short Florida legs with DC-10-10's in the 1970's.
Some examples were:
Flight 37 MIA-MCO-TPA-MSY-LAX
Flight 34 Was eastbound version but for about a year it added PBI so routing was LAX-MSY-TPA-MCO-PBI-MIA
Flight 66 MIA-PBI-MCO-JFK
There were many others, I remember them fondly.

IMissPiedmont,
You're right on the mark!!! AA at one time (mid/late 70's) flew DC10 LAX-PSP-PHX. What was particularly unusual about this was the -10 was scheduled during the summer months!

man, I wish I could have seen all those heavy jets at smaller airports. Even more to consider is the airports that get commuter-level, or Dash-8 service, used to see 737's, DC-9's, and 727's. Those must have been fun times as a spotter.

In the 80s, Western and United both flew DC-10s from SEA-YVR, and Western also did LAX-YVR with DC-10s. Then, I think Continental did GEG-YVR-HNL/OGG or something of that sort. The CO flight probably originated in EWR.

All of these routes you mention were not "weird." Before deregulation, fares were based on mileage. NW flew four DC-10's EA / KSEA), USA - Washington">SEA GEG, because there were a lot of people who wanted to fly to Spokane. Flight 71 was originally a B3F or B2F and was replaced by a DC-10. OMA had lots of traffic on UA to both ORD and DEN. Prior to deregulation, only UA, OZ, BN, NC, FL, and EA served OMA, and UA had a virtual monopoly on traffic eastbound to ORD. While FL offered competition to DEN, FL did not fly on to the NW or the West Coast. AA served both DSM and OMA for a while and then pulled out.

I flew NA 37, MCO-TPA-MSY-LAX. If you were in MCO in the late afternoon, and wanted to get to LA, that was the most direct and fastest way to go. Ground times in TPA and MSY were not 60 minutes back then either. When DL used wide bodies and/or DC-8-61's to CAE and AGS, there was lots of traffic from ATL on those routes. Fort Jackson and Fort Gordon were huge installations, and there were lots of soldiers flying into both cities. There was a 10 or 11 pm departure from ATL to CAE with a stretch Eight that was always full, and I took that flight several times. It was later replaced with either and L10 or DC-10. AUS-DFW was operated several times a day after deregulation with Tens. The flights were full. Large aircraft were used because the demand was there.

The DC10 was flown by AA on the MSY-DFW route for a little over 10 years. AA started service into MSY in 1981, and shortly thereafter, operated the -10's. The service lasted until early 1993. 767's and 757's were also used on the route until the mid 90's.

I recently spoke with an American captain at a Wyndham hotel near my house, and he was telling me how he used to fly the -10's into MSY usually a couple times per week. He said that the flights were always full...just like they were to the other short-haul cities from DFW (he metioned AUS and TUL). He said "I used to fly DC01's and 767's all across the country and the world. Now, I'm a Super 80 captain. Talk about a difference!"
