Pan Am European Routes Out Of LHR

Sun Oct 26, 2003 11:37 am

Hello all,

...I always wanted to get detailed information about Pan Am´s european route network out of London/Heathrow.

Does anyone can fill me in, what cities (except for US, that I know) they served out of LHR?

I know that they flew daily service to FRA and TXL, but what else?

For example, I´ve read that 12 feeder flights connected to the doomed PA103!
One of course was flight PA103A from Frankfurt, but where did the other flights come from?
Also I was always wondering, what happened to those services, after United bought Pan Am´s rights to fly from the US into LHR?
Did British Airways buy the slots, or United?
I know that the FRA hub, with all its routes was completely transferred to Delta, but what happened to LHR?

Any information is highly appreciated.

Best regards,

Dirk.

United Airlines bought all of the Pan Am routes from LHR for US$290 million.

There is another excellent thread on this subject that appeared about 2 weeks ago - if you do a search for Pan Am you should find it. There was one member who provided the entire Pan Am schedule out of LHR......
good luck

I know UA had a fleet of 727s at LHR which flew to Brussels, Amsterdam, Nice, Paris.

If your mate says 103 had 12 flights connecting to it, he probably means the flights that connected to 103 in Frankfurt where most of PA's European flights hubbed - Helsinki, Budapest, Athens, Rome, Copenhagen et al.
fly Saha Air 707s daily from Tehran's downtown Mehrabad to Mashhad, Kish Island and Ahwaz

Hey Cedarjet,

...I finally found out, PA103 possibly connected to at least 10 flights!

FRA, AMS, BRU, HAM, MUC, OSL, TXL, ARN, HEL, DEL.

Best regards

Yes I remember very well Pan Am in London Heathrow, they were in Terminal 3. That was back in the 80's when they were still in good shape (however, late 80's, their future was already uncertain), they had quite an important hub in London. They had a lot of transatlantic flights to the United States, at least two a day to JFK, and they had a lot of flights to other European points mostly in Germany. They flew for years London-Brussels to haul passengers connecting to/from transatlantic flights, they flew the 727 and 737 for a long time on that route, and the A310 for a short time not too long before Pan Am's operations out of London were taken over by United. I remember seeing United 727's in Brussels in the early 90's.

What year are you trying to find out about? In 1962 for instance they flew to Amsterdam, Brussels, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt and Hamburg non-stop with DC-8s and 707s. By 1985 they only had 3 non-stops to Europe and they were to Brussels, Frankfurt and Hamburg. Though in 1986 they added Oslo/Helsinki. At various times in the 80s they had non-stops to Amsterdam, Munich and Nuremberg as well. By the summer of 1990 they had Amsterdam, Brussels, Oslo, Frankfurt, Hamburg and Munich. All were with 727-200s except for Brussels which was with the A310 and Frankfurt which also had a daily 747 service.

Hello DETA737,

...I just found the "PA, TWA & UAL Internat Europen Routes" topic, which answered all of my questions about Pan Am´s LHR operation!

You earn my respect!

Thank You.

I actually flew PanAm from Amsterdam (737-200) via Heathtrow to Seattle in the eighties. If I remember well, the 737 came from Hamburg and had German stewardesses. Don't remember much else though.

Yeah, Pan Am used to have a lot of german Flight Attendants!
They operated crewbases at LHR, FRA and TXL!
A lot of european cabin crews flew both the internal european routes as well as international!
They also operated a BOM base, which is still run by DL!

Oh well, I would have loved to fly for Pan Am out of Europe!
