Continental + Bling-Bling = Disturbing

Tue Oct 28, 2003 4:01 am

I saw this Continental billboard on my way out of EWR on the monorail and knew I had to get a shot of it when I came back through to leave. I dont know whether the ad is disturbing or funny...

I thought it hilarious when I saw it billboard-style on the side of a bus in NYC. Don't know if the older crowd would understand it, though...

I don't know what makes it disturbing. It's just playing into today's pop culture. Inventive marketing if you ask me.

it doesn't make any sense.

Maybe if they threw some 24's on their 777's, or playstation DVD's on each seat they could say that  Big thumbs up

To what demographic? People who make under $25,000 a year? To a certain extent, it makes no sense. Its funny, but from an airline marketing standpoint, its somewhat pointless.

Funny how the words "bling-bling" can be connected with a demographic making less than $25,000 a year. However, I am quite interested to hear your 'creative' explanation as to how this could be the case.

I get it and I make quite a bit over $25K a year. I guess because its a hip-hop reference, only people in the ghetto and those on welfare are supposed to get the joke. This coming from our socioeconomic expert here...

Really, I don't see what the big deal is. I mean, bling-bling is in the Oxoford English Dictionary now.

For those not in the know: Bling-Bling is a reference to elaborate jewelry and clothing and the appreciation of it.

It's putting CO in the popular mainstream. That creates image that will turn in to being cool and catch on with the popular pop culture. It is basically PR to the masses not necessarily to the affluent core who can fly anyone. Hip-hop has a tremendous pull that has made "Tommy Helfiger","Polo" and "Prada" household name beyong the rich. That translates to money, period.

Well Continental has managed to attract nothing but a bunch of school kids, Gen"X"er's, and grown men who still live at home with their momma. While it's a feeble attempt at marketing, (and by the way I AM black) geared towards persons who don't fly that much in the first place . I LOVE to fly but that billboard's humor was about as dry as a 90 year old female ,and I'm sure that drew some serious right wing comments.

I think that is the wave of the future, to become one with the ages and expect soon to have the option of playstation on long leg flights, and special offers on flights to see an eminem or 50 cent concert on the opposite coast!
and has for playstation on planes how weird would that be to be playing a playstation flight simulator game while cruising at an altitude of 35,000 feet? I think that it would make me sick playing on a screen and then looking out the window! LOL , and I get confused on my own playstation at home when I play NHL 2004, and then I go to watch a Vancouver Canuck Game and question why the Capitan of the team is Playing when he was Injured (on the game)

Best regards,

Its hardly a pop-culture reference, its more of a straight-up rap reference. I'll come out and be the first one to say it, I guarantee you the vast majority of CO's Elite members and the people who are paying for full-fare tickets arent getting the joke. I just find it odd that the demographic they chose is one that is notorious for buying lowfare tickets. Some of you have ridiculously thin skin...

And yes. I guarantee you the billboard is real. I have more important stuff to do then photoshop pictures of billboards.

Wow Josh. Did you know that CO HQ in Houston is on Smith Street? Is that named after you?

Apparently you don't realize that the majority of the people who know what bling bling means, don't fly enough to really care. The people who do care,(as most of us (airline buffs) only care about service, equipment, and airline facts. The fact is that Bling Bling has nothing at all to do with flying or even Continental for that matter. How business people do you think want to have anything to do with bling bling. Trying to be "with it" isn't going to sell anymore tickets than if you put Anna Nicole Snith on the same billboard and stated, " We're coming at you in a BIG way"!

P.S. I know some of us are in this forum are not conservative. I just think that the majority of big businesses are not going to look at that billboard and say, " Hey, that's going to be our airline because they're hip"! They're going to look at it and say, "I Don't Think So"!
I can't speak for you guys. As a matter of fact, I love you guys. No one I know loves airliners as much as you guys do but no one in this forum is stupid either.

I guess I have to say it... We African-Americans don't fly enough to notice. But you fly and I know you can count how many African-Americans are frequent fliers or even Elite frequent flyers. The term however comes from African- American culture. Understand?

Jcs and Rb....

You guys are taking the ad way too literally and missing its' point. Jcs, you say that "...I guarantee you the vast majority of CO's Elite members and the people who are paying for full-fare tickets arent getting the joke." Think about that. It's not directed to CO Elite members. CO already has their business! Secondly, the ad has definetly worked. It has gotten us thinking and talking. With that billboard CO has undoubtedly achieved a marketing-must called BRAND RECOGNITION. You don't need to know what bling-bling means as a literal definition or try to analyze what they mean because they've already achieved their goal well before you can come up with some rationale for the ad. People that get bling-bling and people that don't will remember that catchy phrase and think of CO. When they do that they will think of the important part of that message, "We Fly the Newest Jet Fleet." That is what marketing is all about. It's not about the message itself, it's about what the message conveys and if the message translates into brand recognition.

It doesn't work because the joke is too obscure. When I read it, it made me think of "blah blah" which made me think it was another airline disputing CO's claim. Then I noticed the CO logo. It's trying to be clever but it doesn't work.

(P.S. I used to be an advertising copywriter.)

It does work! People will remember that, whether they get it or not, it was a Continental advertisement. Oh, and Rb211, people do buy products and services based on advertisements (billboards). If not it wouldn't be a multi-billion dollar industry.

I'm in advertising too, and it just doesn't work. Remember: every word counts. If your readers are not going to get it, you probably should re-think. Some say any attention is good, no so in advertising. Negative advertising usually means negative response. If I were CO, I'd rather people talk about a cool add, rather than try and figure out what the heck they were saying, or implying. Anyone see the Delta adds in SLC? They were just as stupid, and I still can't figure them out. I for one don't take a company seriously when they screw up commercials intentionally.

I really dont see how the use of a term from rap/pop culture can be so disturbing to some of you (jcs, rb....)
It is just an ad, and please tell me how many CO Elites and people who travel on business would actually care about such an add along a highway? If this ad was in the Economist or similar publication, I would agree that it is not very efficient, but its just a billboard.
In addition to that, im seeing a lot of CO adds on bus stations here in NYC that are clearly targeted for leisure travel.

It is not disturbing.

CO has launched, in my opinion, one of the most effective slogan marketing campaigns. I would love to see all the slogans like this, some are 'closer to the aspect of travel' - but others are great as well.

I like the sign, too.
