The Future Of Olympic Airlines

Tue Oct 28, 2003 6:06 am

We hear a lot of things about the future of Olympic....

For some weeks ago, the airliner were renamed from Olympic Airways to Olympic Airlines, separating the airliner to rest of the company (Handlig agency and more...)

A big part of the airliner is going to be sold...

Numerous of international scheduled flights has been cancelled and it's sounds that 2 of the 4 A340s will be sold...

Will Olympic continue "lose altitude"????
Are we going to see again a powerful Olympic like in 70's and 80's?

what is the future of OAL?

I love Olympic! I expect that those kind of sentiments are not seen very often on these boards.

Ok, so their cabin crew is trained by the KGB.
Ok, so their idea of customer service is "sit down and be quiet".
Ok, so they are not the most punctual carrier.

BUT:

They have never played around with their colour scheme (which looks great)
They have a great safety record
Olympic Airways actually reflects the greek national character, and is not some bland Euro airline that could be from any country.
The food is good and plentiful, and flights ex-Athens have nice baklava.
They fly A300's which gives excellent room in business class compared to a BA 757 or 737

I fly LHR-ATH regularly and I would always choose Olympic over BA. Mostly my business class ticket costs around £460 return.

So I hope that Olympic does survive, especially with the Olympic Games coming up soon in Athens.

I hope OA isn't collapsing! I'm going to purchase my ticket from YYZ - ATH next week! I haven't yet flown their A340, just their old 747s.

With the Athens Olympics just around the corner, it would be disappointing to have no national carrier for Greece when the whole world is watching.

"Cabin crew trained by KGB" ... That explains everything!

Didn't Olympic recently reinstate its regularly scheduled flights to Australia? I thought they were re-expanding.

If you check out the OA website, there is some dated information regarding a court case that is investigating if the Hellenic Republic (Greece) gave unlawful state aid to Olympic Airways. Maybe the rumours you've heard have something to do with that.

Where did you hear about cancelled flights and the rumours of "Olympic Airlines"?

Canuckpaxguy,

I believe Olympic is codesharing with Gulf Air for their Australia flights, with Gulf Air operating the equipment to Australia.

Overstaffed, inefficient, and surly?  Big grin
(No, I don't fly with them daily; your experience may differ; &c)
