What Should I Take To London?

Thu Oct 30, 2003 2:42 am

IM going to England Feb 25 and I don't know what I should take. Or if I should land at LGW or LHR. I am leaning tord AA because they go nonstop from ORD right into LHR I could also connect through RDU, or DFW into LGW. They are all on 777 how are American`s 777s? I also want to go KLM because I belong to Northwest Worldperks and want all the miles I can get. If I go KLM I would go through AMS. What does KLM bring to ORD and from AMS to LHR? Thanks

I'd take AA 85 to LHR, direct, close to the city. I took AA86, and it was nice, I mean its no different from the other AA 777s, except in First. Good stuff though

When I read the topic prior to opening it, I was going to say you should take an umbrella and raincoat. In fact, I'm still going to say that!
I'm not dumb. I just have a command of thoroughly useless information.

If you're flying out of ORD, United also flies into LHR. 777 service, maybe even a 744.

Depends really on which mileage program you belong to, or what other criteria you're using to make your decision. You're lucky in one regard, and that your trip will be in the winter, so airlines will be offering great deals to get you to fly with them. Check the airline websites first...a lot of times you can get a great package deal, and bonus miles for doing so.

I don't know if there is a significant price difference flying into LHR vs. LGW, but a host of travel websites can answer that for you.

Good luck!

Yeah when i saw your post I also thought what kind of stuff you should take. I was going to suggest money, a lot of film and camera so you can take pictures and buy me something  Laugh out loud

Hmm have you looked into flying with BMI to Manchester then take a flight down to LHR. It's like if you were flying into Amsterdam with KLM. Or you can fly with BA.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

KLM flies the 737 (all versions) between AMS and LHR but on the Saturday morning flight a 763 is used. Between ORD and AMS the 747 is used. According to the Schiphol website its either 743 or 744.

You can also fly with Air India's ORD-LHR nonstop service, although flights for the next couple months are pretty full already.

If you want to go KLM then you can take KL612:

Deprature: 16:10
Arrival: 07:00
Aircraft type: B747

Then from Amsterdam to London you have a few options/flights:

You could fly into London City which is almost in the middle of London: (All the following flights depart Amsterdam and arrive at London City

KL1555
Departure: 08:30
Arrival: 08:50
Aircraft: Fokker 50

KL1559
Departure: 11:30
Arrival: 11:45
Aircraft: Fokker 50

KL1563
Departure: 14:40
Arrival: 14:55
Aircraft: Fokker 50

KL1567
Departure: 18:55
Arrival: 19:10
Aircraft: Fokker 50

Or there's flights to Heathrow, which is slightly out of the city but can be accessed easily by underground (in that case not so easily  Big grin) or Busses. There is more choice into Heathrow and if you're more of a jet fan then most flights into Heathrow are operated by B737's:

KL1007
Departure: 08:25
Arrival: 09:00
Aircraft: B767

KL1009
Departure: 10:25
Arrival: 10:50
Aircraft: B737

KL1017
Departure: 13:30
Arrival: 13:50
Aircraft: B737

KL1019
Departure: 14:40
Arrival: 15:00
Aircraft: B737

KL1021
Departure: 15:55
Arrival: 16:10
Aircraft: B737

KL1023
Departure: 17:00
Arrival: 17:20
Aircraft: B737

KL1027
Departure: 19:00
Arrival: 19:20
Aircraft: B737

KL1033
Departure: 20:10
Arrival: 20:35
Aircraft: B737

If you wanna fly BA from Amsterdam then here are their flights from Amsterdam:

BA8112
Departure: 10:00
Arrival (LGW): 10:05
Aircraft: B737

BA429
Departure: 10:45
Arrival (LHR): 11:05
Aircraft: A319

BA427
Departure: 11:20
Arrival (LHR): 11:30
Aircraft: A319

BA431
Departure: 11:55
Arrival (LHR): 12:15
Aircraft: A319

BA8114
Departure: 12:00
Arrival (LGW): 12:10
Aircraft: B737

BA8109
Departure: 14:30
Arrival (LGW): 14:40
Aircraft: B737

BA435
Departure: 14:40
Arrival (LHR): 15:05
Aircraft: B757

BA8116
Departure: 16:00
Arrival (LGW): 16:10
Aircraft: B737

BA439
Departure: 16:35
Arrival (LHR) 16:50
Aircraft: A319

BA8118
Departure: 18:20
Arrival (LGW): 18:30
Aircraft: B737

BA441
Departure: 19:15
Arrival (LHR): 19:30
Aircraft: B757

BA8120
Departure: 19:55
Arrival (LGW): 20:05
Aircraft: B737

BA443
Departure: 21:15
Arrival: (LHR): 21:35
Aircraft: B757

Or you could fly British Airways direct from Chicago (I presume that's where you wanna go from!?!?) to heathrow:

BA296
Departure: 17:25
Arrival: 07:15
Aircraft: B777

BA298
Departure: 20:40
Arrival: 10:30
Aircraft: B777

BA294
Departure: 21:15
Arrival: 11:05
Aircraft: B777

Whatever you do, have a nice time in London Big grin

Isn't KLM getting rid of their 743`s by the end of the year? Is it possible that I could get on a KLM MD-11? It looks like AA is the cheapest($330.60) into LHR. But im still thinking about going through RDU (flight 174 to LGW I think) Is that flight ever full?

Thanks for your help

First I would recommend you to fly to LHR instead of LGW

Second, one of the advantage of flying with KLM, is that on the AMS LHR you might have the chance to fly a 767.

It is a very rare chance to fly on such a plane on european route.

Well, it's a long trip, so if want those miles: if gatwick is the best place to arrive based on where you're staying, take NW thru DTW, DL thru CVG, or CO thru EWR. For Heathrow or London City, take KLM.

I have been on the KLM AMS-ORD. Very nice. Good food, service and attractive flight attendents. Also, you will get world perks miles. Definately go Dutch. Have a good trip!
