Anniversary Of ATR Crash In Indiana

Sat Nov 01, 2003 6:10 am

Just remembered today, Halloween, is the anniversary of the American Eagle #4184 ATR crash in Roselawn, Indiana in 1994. The posting about "Halloween flying" sparked my memory. I remember watching TV after being out and hearing that the ATR nose dived into a field between Indianapolis and Chicago....thought it was spooky it went down on Halloween.

Yup.......it was a Monday night. I was home watching Monday Night Football and they where in Chicago for a Bears game. I remember just how nasty the weather was on the field.....

Is there any kind of memorial at the American Eagle 4184 crash site? I understand it went down in a bean field.

Positive Rate, There is a small memorial made by the townspeople near the feild where it went down. I have pics if youd like me to send them to you. Pretty much alls it is is a bunch of little white crosses and a plaque. I was there last December when i decided to stop by driving home to Chicago from Indy.

I remember that night too, Bears vs. Packers was on when it happened, and that was one of the worst Halloween's weather-wise I can recall. If anyone is interested, there is a book on the that crash written by a former AE ATR pilot called "Unheeded Warning" it is a MUST read. Just a great book that offers some amazing insight into not only the crash but also the ATR's problems with icing that went ignored. Anybody know why ORD went all RJ? The ATRs simply are not safe to be flown in ice, that's why they all were sent to MIA and SJU.

The founder of our company was on AE4184. Ironically he chose to fly AE over USAIR because of all the accidents US had at the time.

A children's summer camp, for underprivileged children was founded in his memory: http://www.morryscamp.org
