Trip To Saudi Arabia

Mon Nov 03, 2003 12:49 pm

I am planning a trip to Saudi Arabia this month.
Any advice on the choice of airlines? And a place where I might get nice priced tickets?

Thanks

Depends on where you are coming from, but BA or LH would be a good bet to check with first. Then again Saudi Arabian would be a change of pace, or even Emirates, but I don't think their connections would be that good from the US.

Why are you going there this month? It is Ramadan, no? Horrible time to be in Saudi Arabia. Business is very slow because offices are on a reduced schedule. I assume you're going there on business, as there is little other reason for an American to go there. It is an interesting country. I only went there to visit my father, an American working in the Kingdom. Not a great tourist destination...

As for getting there, BA and Lufthansa offer the best connections to both Riyadh and Jeddah. AF and Swiss offer service a few days per week. You can always take Saudi Arabian either from JFK or any major European airport. Don't expect a drink.

If you have a contact in the Kingdom, he might be able to get you a cheaper fare by buying there. Such was always the case with my mother and myself on trips there.

Thank you Jrlander

Like you, I also have family there (in Riyadh), and I thought that later this month would be a nice time to visit because they would be having the Eid holiday.
Any advice on the tickets?

Don't know about fares in the US but you might call Saudi directly and ask them about fares. Another option would be on Swiss via ZRH to RUH.

I used to fly with KLM to Saudi. Dhahraan (King Fahad International) is their current destination. But i do not expect it will be very cheap because the competition is not great on that route.

You could also try a middle-eastern company, such as Royal Jordanian or Royal Air Maroc. They usually offer good flights from and to Europe, so an onward leg might be well priced too. But mind the drinks on those flights.

In fact, just make sure you dont get the duty-free booze in the US!

ConcordeLoss:

Talk to your family there- see if they can get you a cheaper fare by purchasing the tickets there. There are often family bargains to make it cheaper.

Another option is to fly into Bahrain, and then have your family meet you there. I think I paid like $1200 for a roundtrip JFK-LHR-BAH. Depending on where in the Kingdom your family lives, they might not mind driving to Bahrain for a little break. My father certainly didn't mind!

When my mother flies into Riyadh, she has normally taken LH, as the fares were pretty good and they offer more nonstop services per week.

ORD or JFK to RUH or JED via IST...

TK is a good airline, transfers are easy in Istanbul's new international terminal, and I'm sure the fare won't be too much...
