Former NHL Player Al Secord

Tue Nov 04, 2003 12:58 am

Al Secord used to play for the National Hockey League's Chicago Blackhawks in the 1980's. I heard that he is now an airline pilot with American Airlines. Does anyone know what type of aircraft he flys and what seat?

A quick search of the FAA website turns up an Alan Edward William Secord. No address is available so no clue as to location.

This Mr. Secord possesses a Second class medical issued in May of this year.
He possesses an Airline Transport Pilot certificate for Airplane Multiengine Land with commercial privileges in airplane single engine, type-rated with ATP privileges in the Beechcraft 1900 only, with the familiar restriction "second in command required". Incidentally, though, he also possesses a flight engineer-turbojet certificate.

So based on that information, I doubt he flies for AA, unless he's a furloughee from pretty far back.

I don't know about Secord, but former Buffalo Bills guard Jim Ritcher who was a pro bowler and played quite a few seasons for Buffalo now flies MD-80's for AA.

I remember reading an article in the Toronto Star a couple of years back that made mention of Al Secord. From what I recall, he was a first officer for AA flying the Fokker. I can't for the life of me remember what the news article was about....but it wasn't about Secord specifically.

A couple years ago, Ritcher piloted the charter plane carrying the Bills down to (Miami?) I think. Anyway, the team got a kick out of it and there was a big article in the paper. I was pretty surprised when I read it. Imagine being a successful NFL football player and a commerical airline pilot???....that's a nice life.

From what I know, Secord became a pilot for AA shortly after his NHL career ended. He then came out of retirement and played for the IHL Chicago Wolves. I have no idea if he resumed his career as a pilot.

Recent interview said that he took a leave of absence from AA when he played for the Wolves.

Boeing764: If Secord took a leave of absense from AA to play for an AHL team, then he must've been hit in the head once too many! He was one of the last helmetless pro players I believe.

ZRB: Quite a life for Mr. Ritcher indeed!

Like flying, hockey is hard to get out of your blood. I should know, I'm spending a year in Japan and am not able to play ice hockey, the sport I love, I miss it a lot. I understand Mr. Secord's decision to take 6 month's or so off and return to the game he played for most of his life. Before you criticize his choices N2111J, you should walk a mile in his shoes!

One of the "Miracle on Ice" players is (was) an Avro pilot for Mesaba. Anyone know who it is? It was in the USA Today right before the winter olympics, but I forgot who it was.

Apparently former female Olympian Bonny Warner is a 777 co-pilot (if I read this correctly)

Accoording to http://www.speaking.com/speakers/bonnywarner.html she is a United Airlines captain. It has a photo of her in the right seat of a 777.

If I am not mistaken, AA also has a former Shuttle astronaut flying MD-80's . Nice skill to have if you run out of fuel.

Boeing764: No criticism for Mr. Secord at all, that was just a bit of humor that escaped you I guess.

I think that all the folks mentioned in this thread who have moved onto pilot careers after sports careers are very fortunate and I certainly respect them.

Spent considerable time on the job in airplanes, which sparked his lifelong interest in becoming a pilot.
http://www.hockeydraftcentral.com/1978/78016.html

On one web site, it says he's a Taxas-based pilot for AA. On another, it says he's a pilot for Great Lakes Airlines.

In any case, the nice thing about having him as a pilot is that no pax will hijack his plane without having to put up a good fight first...

Never let the facts get in the way of a good theory.

If I remember right, I remember seeing a feature on Al Secord when he played for the Chicago RHI (Roller Hockey International) team, and it was about him being a pilot...all I pretty much remember was him being around a prop in the UAL Express colors...it could have been a B190 or a JS31/41. This was around 1994.
