Air Canada: YYZ-DAB Canceled

Tue Nov 04, 2003 5:21 am

Here we go once again. In only a matter of days, AC cancels another yet-to-be-launched route. Toronto-Daytona Beach, which was to start 13 December, is now zeroed out.

A few questions:

- how good are AC's market forecasts?
- is AC finally reacting to poor loads and canceling routes as it should?
- is AC still trying to decide its future? And if so, do recently announced routes not fit in with their strategy anymore?

AC is very confusing to follow, but fun nonetheless.

What are the routes within the past six months that have been cancelled?

I agree... I for one am glad, from a bystander point-of-view that we have such an entertaining airline industry to follow. Sucks to work/ or wait for work in it though...

YUL-FCO
YUL-MEX
YYZ-DAB

YYZ-DAB was supposed to be CRJ. Ill bet it was a glitch in the system, because the CRJ would be one hell of a weight restrict to DAB.

FLYYUL- Could you elaborate on why DAB would mean a weight restriction for a CRJ. It can't be due to runway length since we do have a 10500ft runway.

I was looking forward to seeing an Air Canada CRJ here in DAB. At least something different than the daily dose of Delta MD88s and CRJs and Continental ERJs.......and ERAU Cessna 172s.

Maybe my vote at AirTran's site for them to serve DAB will win them over and we can get a little variety.  Smile

I agree this is bad management.....they promote these routes then cancel them at the very last minute. I know people who had actually booked on those flights.

I am not an AC basher but they need to get their priorities straight.

FLYYUL, they also cancelled YUL to BEY at last minute.

Toronto-Daytona Beach is a little far for a little CRJ. You would probably have to weight restrict to 35 pax or so most of the time.

The main probelm with the YYZ-DAB route was poor marketing on Air Canada's part. DAB has tonns of Canaidian vistors every year. The problem was that they had saturday and sunday only flights that they were selling just air only. With weekend flights, if they have package deals or work with a tour opperator, they call sell the seats with the hotels. If someone was planning a vacation for a week, the only way they'd fly air canada is if it was part of the whole package.

That was the main problem why they didnt sell enough.

I was looking forward to seeing AC in DAB...darn it! Would have been a nice change from just DL & CO Express jets all the time.

CVG777- I'm with you- I voted for DAB & CMH on AirTran's poll. We're already (apparently) getting Hooters Air 1/30/04 here (CMH), maybe we'll end up with FL sometime in the future, too!

How do you know that the reason is because AC didnt market the flight properly..

The operations didnt even start on the flight, so you cant really assess what happened. its like saying the YULMEX was cancelled due to lack of demand, when the flight was almost soldout for several dates during the holidays, YULFCO same thing.

I would have loved to see that AC CRJ at DAB ,Im think the flight might have worked. We also have to consider that the vast majority of Canadian visitors that come to DAB are alot of college kids (most of them come by bus)- so maybe the Canadian crowd this town attracts is not the type to really care if they have to sit on a bus for hours as long as they get to the fun in the sun.
But AC really should correct this practice of announcing flights and then cancelling it before even starting it.

<AC didnt market the flight properly..>>

Seeing that statistics show over 100,000 candain tourists visit every spring......

100,000 / 100 days (spring season) = as much as 100 per day

Granted some drive, some fly, but they could have made it work, the flight may have also been starting too early, it may have done quite well in february and march.

"elaborate on why DAB would mean a weight restriction for a CRJ"

No offense, CVG777 as a PPL you should know how the whole fuel/payload/range relationships works. To be sure, goto Delta practice area (if you can get a slot) and fly over/around the Bithlo towers for 5 hours alone, then land. Then, go back and refuel, but this time squeeze in 3 passengers, all while maintaining weight limits, and try again for 5 hours. If you're flying what I think you're flying, you'll run out of fuel abeam Deland. Air Canada does not like running out of fuel mid-flight, nor should you.

All you canucks, don't bring up Gimli and squash my point!
buhh bye
