This Runway Looks Like Crap!

I hope this runway at CMH still doesn't look like this. Do all the runways at CMH look like this? If they do, I'd say they need a makeover.

Concrete cracks...it's a fact of life...looks as though all the cracks have been properly filled and sealed, though.

Rest assured there is a car that crosses those runways several times daily checking for any new/reappearing cracks, debris, etc.

Sure it may not look great, but it's functional  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Do they attempt to repave them after a while?
they could do it overnight

Runways are repaved every couple decades.

they could do it overnight

I hope that was a joke.  Smile

When runways are rehabilitated, they are usually closed for 2-3 months. It's not an overnight process.

Runway construction is a much much more complex process than road construction.

The concrete mixture needs to be a certain consistency throughout the whole runway, must not contain any microscopic cracks which would eventually lead to macroscopic cracks quickly. The runway throughout the entire length must be almost perfectly on the exact same level with only very minor flucuations.

Often times they need to do a same area over and over again because it turns out the concrete consistency is no good.

The engineering and inspection of runways takes months. It's not like building a road. There aren't that many stringent requirements for road constructions.

I haven't flown through CMH in a long time. How many runways does CMH have ? Don't they have two ?

Yes, they have two runways. Recently, the 3rd runway was closed 5/23 about 4,800 ft something... now, it has two runways are 8,000 ft and 10,251 ft. You can see the link: http://www.airnav.com/airport/KCMH

PS - I have been there a couple of times. It was fine not too roughy on runway.

Along those same lines, I was taking off from JFK to LHR back in September (can't remember which runway), and the surface seemed very very rough. Anyone know anything about the conditions of JFK's runways?

The runway you are looking at is 28L/10R. It will be resurfaced (in halves) in the near future and touchdown zone lighting and centerline lighting will be installed. Other taxiway/apron projects will be completed at this time. The first half (10R side) is slated for April-Sept 2004. 2005 for the other half.

"Runway construction is a much much more complex process than road construction."

When it comes to concrete paving, the conditions (and expectations of quality) faced by contractors working on high speed roadways are just as tough as on runway projects. A runway would however feature more material to be placed. When it comes to thickness, a single pass with a slipform paver would typically do on both types of jobs.

Also keep in mind that a paved surface can be rehabilitated in different ways, without necessarily requiring it all to be torn up and rebuilt from scratch (resurfacing, white-topping and diamond grinding come to mind).

When runways are rehabilitated, they are usually closed for 2-3 months. It's not an overnight process.

Frankfurt´s runway 25R/07L (which is in a very bad shape) is currently being repaved and therefore closed for a couple of hours every night. It´s a pretty long process though which will take a long time until finished.

You can see that a part of the runway is already freshly paved:

I have flown myself into CMH several times as pilot never as passenger. That was within the past year. I really don't remember the runways being exceptionally rough.

I couldn't decide which one looked in worse shape...the runway or the aircraft!  Smile

But to experience a truly bad runway, try VVO (Vladivostok) in Russia. We operate 737's there from ICN and the runway is in very poor shape. It would have to be the worse runway I have experienced. I sometimes wonder if a dirt strip would be better.

Geneva (GVA/LSGG) has a interesting way to resurface the runway... they change big blocks of concrete with a special crane...take the old one out and put the new one in, and yes, it is done overnight.

Yes, I will concur with 9V-SPF that FRA's 25R/07L is VERY rough. On take-off last Sat., Nov 1 on AC 845 to YYC, the pilot was kind enough to warn the passengers in a pre-take-off announcement that the take-off run would be very rough...and it was!

Was the original material formed in place?
