Day Or Night Flights - Which Do You Prefer?

Tue Nov 04, 2003 9:26 pm

For me I just love flying longhal flights that depart at night. I don't know why but it seems the atmosphere is different, even at the airport as at night more people drink in the airport bars and so there is a 'happier' vibe, plus it's great to see all those city lights when you takeoff etc - more of an adventure. What about you - do you prefer day or night flying?

On longhauls - night flights: you board the plane, watch the lights receding, eat dinner, recline the seat, sleep, wake up to eat breakfast, watch the landing and get off the plane - on day flights you'll always have to keep your fingers crossed that the airline has some decent films running (or that the book(s) that you've put into your handluggage aren't all that boring...  Wink/being sarcastic

On short haul I definetely prefer day flights, departing in the morning and arriving around lunch time. On long haul flights usually I prefer to fly through the night, cuz I feel tired and after dinner just can have a sleep.

From a pilot's perspective, probably the worst flights would be those that leave at night and arrive early morning. While they may be the most "comfortable" for the passenger, most pilots consider them to be the worst because of fatigue. The early morning sunrise seems to bring an onset of fatigue for most people and for a flight such as SYD-ICN (10 hours, single set of crew + 1 additional F/O), you are usually really feeling it by the end of the flight!

Of course, many cabin crew like nighttime flights because usually pax are sleeping which means less service is required!  Smile

...guess you can't please everyone!

Cheers,
Phil

I think flying day time is good for watching the earth from high above, whilst night doesn't give that special touch.Although I do recall flying over NY city (IAD-LHR),it was at night, but New York's lights were something else from upthere.I was able to spot the Chrysler building!

I like departing in daylight, having a few hours of light through the windows, then approaching at night time. I love to see all the landing lights on the cameras.

I prefer to either take off early morning or early evening so I can catch the sunrise/sunset from 20K.

i prefer day flight. Night flights are so tiring and there is nothing to spot.

I just remember one night flight I liked a lot.

It was a red eye flight from SFO to MIA, I was with my boss and he advised me to sleep because we needed it, so just before the flight, we had a wonderful sushi meal with a lot of sake.

I have never slept so well in a plane after that diner.

I prefer day flights for spotting and viewing purposes unless I have an international flight eastbound where of course in Atlanta, you don't have much of a choice. I once took the red-eye from LAX to ATL and this couple had their twin babies on board. Now I really know why they call it the red-eye!

If it is a somewhat lengthy (5+ hours) eastbound segment then I'd love to it be a night flight. Especially if I'm not travelling in coach.

for example BA 182 JFK-LHR, have dinner in the lounge courtesy of BA, then when u get on the plane go straight to sleep. 7 hours later you're in LHR and its morning.

same for A 268 LAX-LHR. Although that one arrives around 3pm in london.

however when travelling in economy i prefer for the flight to land late in the afternoon in europe if it is a transatlantic. That way I dont have to try to stay awake all day long.

bad example of this is Swiss A330 JFK-GVA. Arrives at 9:15 am in geneva! I can't contain myself until bedtime!

I enjoy flying at night more than during the day. I love seeing the city glowing below me and I also think that it is a better vibe flying at night.

I like day flights, but I don't mind night flights that much.

I had a American Airlines flight from MCO-LGA that left at sunset (this was in the fall so it got dark early) and didn't land at LGA until well after dark. It was very cool seeing Washington DC and New York City lights at night.
