EasyJet Announces Major New Base At Berlin Schönef

Great news for Berlin, and for the easyJet network!

Note that they've chosen not to take Ryanair on from Stansted, but I bet it's enough to annoy O'Leary anyway...

NCE is one of the routes - excellent - been wanting to go to Berlin. And Schoenefeld too, just for humour value.

Interesting route for NCL, hope it works well  Big thumbs up
"The routes, all joining existing cities on the easyJet network, are London Luton, Liverpool, Bristol and Newcastle in the UK, Paris and Nice in France, Palma Majorca and Barcelona in Spain, Naples in Italy, Copenhagen in Denmark and Athens in Greece."
Another EZY route for CPH also, starting to see a bit of EZY activity there also.

Bigger things in the pipeline for CPH if EZY can get the handling charges down to what it wants... it's just a tad pricey for us orange mob at the moment  Big grin

Rumours also of an AGP base next year, flights to the UK and Europe (like SXF / CPH), and also domestic Spanish like BIO, BCN...

Watch this space eh??

EZY obtained quite a few new slots at Schiphol (finally) so I expected at least 3 new routes out of Amsterdam, the only new destination is a once-daily rotation to Bristol .....

Sounds very good, especially for the local economy. Apparently this is also realised by the local politicians, as you can see from the fact that the prime ministers of bot Berlin and Brandenburg were present at the announcement. (SXF is actually located just outside the Land Berlin in the Land Brandenburg).

>>>been wanting to go to [...] Schoenefeld too, just for humour value.

Huh? What´s so funny about SXF?

"Berlin Schönefeld is only 20 kilometres from central Berlin and is accessible by train in 28 minutes. Of the other airports in Berlin, Tempelhof will close permanently in October 2004, and all growth has been capped at Tegel, which will close permanently when the new Berlin Brandenburg International Airport at Schoenefeld opens (provisionally scheduled for 2009/2010)."

I thought they didn't buy dBA because of German labour laws and labour costs and here they are setting up in SXF!

From their timetable the planes based are only 3 and not 6 as written in the press released.
Paris is not available in the booking system.
turnaround time in SXF is 20 minutes, but for every daily plane rotation there is a longer turnaround of 45 minutes, likely when there is the change of the crew.

Plane 1:

SXF 0710-1110 ATH 1140-1345 SXF 1430-1645 NCE 1725-1935 SXF 1955-2105 CPH 2130-2240 SXF

Plane 2:

SXF 0600-0855 PMI 0935-1230 SXF 1315-1425 BRS 1450-1705 SXF 1735-1950 NAP 2030-2250 SXF

Plane 3:

SXF 0700-0810 CPH 0835-0950 SXF 1010-1255 BCN 1325-1605 SXF 16.50-1945 PMI 2025-2320 SXF

Flights to LTN (2 daily), LPL e NCL are operated with planes from those bases.

Interesting to see what will happen with two daily flight to Palma.

Easyjet is not a so well known brand in Germany and the Mallora Shuttle from Air Berlin is really a good product to fight with.

Excellent to see more easyJet expansion in Mainland Europe. Just pity they didn't announce Geneva - Berlin.

that is wonderful news!!! not only for the public, but especially for the airport. although it lacks sufficient ground transportation to the city centre, this is a good alternative to reach Berlin. and with growing supply at SXF and the end of THF (unfortunately) coming closer, hopefully, access to SXF will be facilitated.

it will be interesting to watch how Lufthansa/germanwings will react to this. it´s been rumored that germanwings (4U) will also go for a third base after CGN and STR. although ZRH has been in the running for some while along with Berlin and others, i would not be surprised if LH/4U would now try to counter easyJet at SXF.
there´s already so many low-fare carriers and routes at ZRH for a considerably small catchment area, and there´s certainly more to be lost in Berlin. so i´m pretty sure Lufthansa is considering growing 4U at SXF to level the playing field.

Airsicknessbag - re: Schoenefeld too, just for humour value

"Humour value" is just an expression - SXF is a bit unusual and interesting because not that many airlines fly there any more, plus the fact that it used to be the airport for East Berlin (I'm a child of the Cold War). I would have loved to fly into Tempelhof too, I've read that architecturally its interesting (used to be the biggest building in Europe/The World at one point ?)

I see there is still no expansion at EMA. I dont know why they dont just pull out of EMA because it never gets anywhere in U2's plans

Might be to do with dBA being legally registered in Germany and thus liable to Germany's labour laws whereas EZY can employ people under British labour laws?Similar to what FR does in CRL I think.

>>>though [SXF] lacks sufficient ground transportation to the city centre, this is a good alternative to reach Berlin.

Certainly not. SXF is one of the few German airports to have direct access to the German Rail network.

It´s easier to get to the Berlin city centre from SXF than from TXL:

to Main Station:
SXF 30 minutes with train (one connexion); TXL 26 minutes with bus (one connexion)

to Eastern Station (city centre of East Berlin):
SXF 17 minutes with train (direct link); TXL 43 minutes with bus and train (one connexion)

to Zoo Station (city centre of West Berlin):
SXF 27 minutes with train (direct link); TXL 21 minutes with bus (direct link)

to Potsdamer Platz:
SXF 35 minutes with train (one connexion); TXL 32 minutes with bus and tube (one connection)

(All of the above are best case scenarios.)

I´m really wondering why SXF is always perceived as the ugly duckling and doesn´t get the attention it deserves.

Interesting that employees get this news not from the company but from A.net first.  Nuts

Still, I'm excited. See y'all aboard one of their flights.  Big thumbs up
