KQ Aircraft Returning To Airport After Take-off

Thu Nov 06, 2003 11:33 pm

Today KQ 480, 5Y-KQK a B732 from NBO to DAR had to return to NBO airport few minutes after take-off, as there were "engine related" problems. Engineers took 2 hours to fix it, while pax were requested to wait inside the airport.
Later on the pilot described the problem to be related to the aircondition. Strange twist of events, as they had fire services on standby during landing. And during the repair process, they tested the engines at high levels on the ground (pretty noisy).
Why would they say there are problems with the aircon, while they obviously worked on the engines. A common lie, to make pax feel at ease??

The plane looks like a junk, and even after the second take-off, there was a smell of burning plastic in the cabin.

Unpleasant experience with Kenya Airways, usually they come across as very reliable.

Not necessarily a lie, because the power for the air conditioning is bled from the engines; thus, it could be an engine fault that caused the air conditioning problem. Perhaps the a/c packs were malfunctioning - perhaps someone can give a more technical response, but I don't think KQ was lying!

Was it a -200, -300 or -700?

The plane which was experiencing the problems was one of their old 737-200. They still flie 3 of that series. Comfort levels on the -300 and -700 are much better.

The three are aptly registered as 5Y-KQJ, 5Y-KQN and 5Y-KQK

that makes it JNK --- Junk
