Not Another Boeing Vs. Airbus

Fri Nov 07, 2003 12:19 am

Hello everyone!

No, it's not another war, I was just wondering why people never mention McDonnel Douglass aircraft in their comparisons. Why is it always Boeing or Airbus? I personally think that MD made perfectly reliable airplanes. I flew on DC-9, DC-10, MD-82s and MD-11s and don't have complaints about not feeling safe in one. Why is it that the only people who mention MDs in their comparisons say how bad they are? Why do people hate Douglass' product? Can anyone convince me?

...main reason is that MD has since been gobbled up by Boeing lol...

to be honest I would rather fly on a DC9, DC10, MD80 any day over a Boeing or an Airbus aircraft.

I don't have any complaints about the MD80 or the MD11, and I'd rather fly on an MD11 over any Airbus (including the A380).

I have only flown on a MD80.

But it was a good experience. I would like to travel on a DC-10

Let's face it. The Airbus vs. Boeing wars are more like America vs. Europe wars. That's why you don't get the same against MDD or other manufacturers.

I think that if Douglas was still around, there woul be heated arguments on Douglas versus Boeing. Had Douglas remained... more competitive than they did... Airbus would not be nearly as successful as it is today. It would be like Canadair taking over the world. Hardly likely! But with the loss of the Douglas line, Airbus found themselves in a fortunate position. They were then the only competitor to Boeing.

I love the Douglas aircraft. I have almost always preferred them to Boeings. However, with the advent of the 737NG, I prefer that plane to the MD-80. But I prefer an MD-80 to a 737classic.

The Douglas planes were built like tanks, according to some of my aviation professors who worked on both types. Douglas used high-tech, flat aft bulkheads, while Boeing stuck with hemispherical designs. Just stuff like that.

I was always wondering, why don't they make planes out of same material as black boxes?

Levg79- Im watching the movie "down the earth" right now with Chris Rock, he said "I was always wondering, why don't they make planes out of same material as black boxes?" as a joke in the movie.....no one laughed....LOL.

Personally i dont compare McDD to Boeing or Airbus because Boeing now owns them. Plus, in my eyes, McDD has always had a very awsome product. I never once thought bad things of McDD. I dont mind comparring aircraft makes and modles but like i said, i LOVE all McDD aircraft already and since they dont make aircraft anymore theres nothing to compare them to anymore.

DC9's / MD80's are a very thin tube, plus if you sit at the back, your window view is obscured by the engine  Sad

last flight I had in an MD80 was from ARN to LHR with SAS, the pilot told us how the aurora borealis was clearly visible, but alas all I could see was the side of the engine!

Like all planes however, the main thing is not the make/model of a plane, it is how the operator kits it out inside for the passenger.

...well only if you are seated in the last two or three rows. Condemming an aircraft because of a handful of seats is preposterous.

"I was always wondering, why don't they make planes out of same material as black boxes?"

I think the plane would be too heavy to get off the ground then. 4 tiers of titanium used for an entire aircraft fuselage...

I've always loved MDDC jets also, whether it be flying on them or watching them at the airport. Its always a treat to see them now a days since none of them are in production and are pretty much becoming scarce.

 Big thumbs up
Caution wake turbulence, you are following a heavy jet.

Good day,

Well, yeah, Captaingomes is right. I reckon that it is a war between Europe and USA. But to reply to some of the comments on which aircraft to use. I would actually rather use Boeing and Airbus to McDonnell Douglas.

I've been on the MD-11 and DC-10, and they scare the hell out of me. My first experience was with a MH DC-10, and it was one of the worst flight of my life.

Cheers!

Kind regards,
Benjamin
