Why Not Asian Airlines To Helsinki?

Fri Nov 07, 2003 2:38 am

Hello all,

I have been thinking why doesn't any Asian carrier fly to Helsinki, even the demand is very strong? Finnair has very successfully expanded their Asian network with very positive results. At the moment Helsinki is 5th biggest hub in Europe in terms of traffic between China and Europe. At the moment Finnair flies daily to Bangkok, 5x per week to Beijing, 3x week Shanghai, 4x week Hong Kong, 3 x week Singapore, 3 x week Osaka and 2x week to Tokyo (NRT). All flights are very full and 75% of passengers are Asian. Most of them have connecting flights to Scandinavia or Central-Europe... The problem is that Finnair is unable to add anymore capacity. Their all five MD-11 are very well utilized and there isn't any more GE powered MD-11s available for lease. Also, Finnair has unsuccessfully tried to get more slots to Narita...

Helsinki has many advantages if compared to Copenhagen or Arlanda for example: Helsinki is the nearest point of Asia in Europe geographically, here are one of cheapest landing fees in Europe, extremely well working airport without bad delays or lack of capacity and very good connections to anywhere else in Europe.

I have heard that Thai has been planning Helsinki flights, but that's all... Any ideas?

Regards,
FinnWings

Heard a rumour about Korean Air Cargo to HEL.
I think that Finnair codeshares with a large number of airlines, and so thats maybe why?

Finnair's flights to SIN & HKG are thru BKK, most direct non-stop service from any point in Asia to HEL would not sustain 2 airlines...

Since Finnair operates B757s why not lease in B767s from Austrian or SAS? Same pilot rating after all...

Not enough population to sustain a flight to HEL.

And... Finnair is carrying lots of pax from other countries and using HEL as a transit stop.

Yeo thats right; Finnair has codeshares with many airlines who transfer all the pax out from HEL.

Vantaa was also judged third european airport by skytrax http://www.airlinequality.com/ and ninth in the world, so indeed it is quite an interesting and comfortable(!) airport.

but knowing this should they not increase their transit traffic so they can consequently increase the long-haul routes?

GKirk, I have heard same rumors about KAL... Also Emirates has bought landing rights to Helsinki.

You are partly right considering of Finnair's code-share agreements... Shanghai and Beijing are code-share flights with Air China and BKK flights with Qantas... BUT... The weird thing is that HKG flights aren't code-share with Cathay Pacific even both are OneWorld members. I guess Finnair doesn't want add CX flight numbers for their long-hauls, because demand is so high that they can easily sell all seats self.

So I just wonder, wouldn't direct HKG-HEL flight be excellent for CX? They could feed passengers for Finnair's large European network and offer much more comfortable and easier connections for their passengers than via Heathrow, for example? Also, the overall trip time would decrease a lot...

SNBA319, thanks for your comment of Helsinki-Vantaa! Your home airport isn't bad either (BRU)... I have been there many times  Smile

I have also waited for Asian airlines to come to Helsinki, I believe there might be a surprisingly big market here. After all, the population of Finland may not be big enough but the surroundings of Finland (Russia, Baltics, Scandinavia) offer Helsinki the natural status of a hub to the area. And with this area covered, the population is 50-70 million people.

As we have to wait for Thai, Emirates, Cathay, Malaysian etc. I am glad that many European airlines have shown their interest in Helsinki. And what makes me very happy is the fact that Finnair is such a European professional in flights to Asia and does so well on those routes. It is expected that the amount of passengers HEL-Asia will be three times bigger in 2010..

@Finnwings;
to be honest BRU sucks!  Wow! The A-pier is new and the best part, but its in the middle of nowhere. I preferred AMS where i worked on several jobs during Uni. it came second on the european list, after CPH. I was in Vantaa a month ago, had to do a walk-around in the terminal&transit and i meant it is a neat&tidy charming airport that deserved its nomination.  Big thumbs up
about Oneworld; there is hardly any signage at Vantaa for Oneworld, they keep it quite low-profile except for Finnair. Smokin cool
saw the next foto on another topic, thought you might like it as it is your favourite ac.

SNBA319,
Nice photo! Sad that MCDD never designed such a nice shortened MD-11!!  Big thumbs up Anyway, seems that capacity is quite limited maybe it might fit better for intra-European flights as a replacements for A320s..  Laugh out loud

FunFlying,
I really agree with you...the market is surprisingly big indeed. Don't forget the leisure market either as the northern parts of Finland (Lapland) are very exotic and increasing holiday destinations for Asians. The midnight sun at summer and northern lights during winter with extremely beautiful nature have been the key elements why those Asian tourists have decided visit there. During the peak times Finnair has carried primarily Japanese tourists to Lapland by their MD-11s on these short domestic routes.

Solnabo,
We don't see any TG B747s here at Helsingfors-Vanda (HEL)... They only code-shares HEL-ARN and HEL-CPH flights.  Crying

I gather that Malaysia Airlines has operated charter flights in the past from Vantaa. I may be wrong but Finnair has definitely flown into Malaysia on charters.

I guess the answer would lie in connecting traffic. As Finnair is now with OneWorld - only Cathay could make a viable route to HEL since passengers would be able to transfer on to Finnair flights - but as you mentioned - it seems odd that Cathay and Finnair don't already code-share between HKG-HEL.

From Malaysia Airlines' point of view - it already serves Scandinavia through its successful codeshare with KLM.

Thai flew a route to HEL in the 1990s but it didnt last long.

I think AY should go non-stop on the HEL-HKG route, after all that is the best way to feed from oneworld hub to another. Business traffic on this route surely must be more than BKK which is more leisure, so a non-stop option should work.

the only carriers hat have a realistic chance of doing something with HEL could be Emirates or Qatar Airways. None of them have the Nordic area covered.
