Fri Nov 07, 2003 3:56 am

Does any body know where I could possibly get a flip on a 747Sp and a 747-100. I know SAA have an SP but i cant fly before it is taken out of service.

Well I guess the only place you can get an SP is SAA. If you want a 747-100 hitch a flight with UPS. Sorry man it's a little late for the SP.

Too bad Tower's not still in business, because I think that they flew 741's until recently.

Aren't some 741s in domestic config still in operations in Japan?

One way or the other - 741 and 74L are definitely getting tough these days...

Iran Air ans Syrian Air use regularly the -SP to Europe.
So does Air Namibia I think.... They were used to fly the -SP between WDH and FRA / LHR.

You can fly Iranair for 747SPs...
Orient Thai for 747-100s, L-1011s...

Both JAL and ANA operate something called a 747SR...747-100s with short range tanks installed. You can only fly these within the domestic flight structure of Japan, but if you have the chance, make sure you buy a "super seat" and enjoy! As an alternate, you can always catch a 747-200 by Northwest while they are still flying.

Yeah, Japan Airlines still has some 741 but with SUD looking like a 743.

Another possibility to fly the 741 would be Saudi Arabian Airlines, on the RUH-DAC flights they have several 741 but I got unfortunately a 743.

For SPs I would go on Iran Air on a THR-CDG vv., NRT/PEK-THR vv. or a KUL-THR vv.
Syrian Air doesn't operate them on scheduled basis anymore.

Global Air is supposed to operate from Capetown to Stansted starting mid-December.
This with a 747SP-27, presently located Jakarta.
Apparently a 3 months-long contract...

Cessna172RG: A common misconception you have there. The "SR" in 747SR actually stands for "Special Requirement" not "Short Range". These aircraft are fully capable of transpacific ops, nonstop. I believe Kalitta has one now, used for long range freight hauling.

FLYSSC, the Air Namibia SP was scrapped from the route network when SW started leasing a 767-300 (about 3-4 years back), which was then followed by an SP after the 763 was returned (too expensive, not enough cargo space), only for the SP to be replaced by the 747-400 Combi that they operate currently, which - I think - they got either in 1999 or 2000: since then there have been no SPs in Air Namibia colors...
