WOW...Swiss MD-11's

Fri Nov 07, 2003 9:51 am

I was done refueling the Swiss MD-11 today and was looking for the Mechanic to see if the plane needed anymore fuel. I walked into the MD-11 and walked through first class into the cockpit to talk to him. As i was walking out of the plane i stopped in amazment and looked at those damn seats. Who ever can afford to fly in those is gonna ride in comfort the whole way. Very very nice plane, to bad there leaving soon. BTW: today is the first time i have ever stepped foot into another airlines airplane other then AA's. I couldnt believe it but when i thought about it i was stund to remember that.

I've had the pleasure of flying Swiss's Business Class, but in the A330. It's a great product and for an airline that's been through a rough time, their cabin crews are really friendly and helpful, that goes for in economy as well. The 330s have PTVs in every seat, relatively sophisticated system with alot of programming compared to others I have seen. Whether with the MD-11 or the 'buses, let's hope Swiss can stay independent and continue the tradition of aviation excellence in Switzerland!

He took about 48k Gallons today if i remember right....i only did a LH 747/ Alitalia 742 (operated by atlas) and the swiss MD-11....i work for GlobeGround at ORD.

Md11lover- I think the MD-11 is a GREAT looking aircraft, i sure wish i had the fuel range it was suppose to because i loved it when it was with AA, i got to see it all the time at DFW when i was a kid. Now its just the 777 (thats fine with me i love that plane) but still AA was a big operator of DC-10s and MD-11s and wished they still had 747s....maybe someday though.

I think that SWISS did a GREAT job on the interiors of there aircraft....VERY clean and VERY cozzy. The cockpit was spotless and very neat. Wish i was on that flight but oh well.....someday.

I had a chance to fly Swiss business class last year (on the A330). Amazing, unbelievable service, so I am assuming than first class would be something out of the ordinary.

I have had the privilege of flying in that beautiful aircraft in Business and First.

ZRH-NRT-ZRH
ZRH-BKK-ZRH

The service is exceptional and the F/As are highly professional and I am sure very recommended.

The Md-11 is not my favorite plane but I must admit that the three engine layout does make it stick out and don't get me started with the wingtips!!! Brilliant! I also think that the new Swiss colors on the Md-11 are better than the Swissair colors. I have also flown on the A330 in Business and First. I prefer the cabin layout in the MD-11 though but it the A330 does look brighter...why I do not know!

I will continue to fly with Swiss as much as possible!

BA may have found the slogan "The World's favorite airline" but in Swiss' case, this would be appropriate "My favorite airline!"

Great feedback Bobs89irocz!

unfortunately I never flew Swiss MD11, only Swissair on a BKK-ZRH and a ZRH-KIX-ZRH but I'm looking forward to fly it on Swiss before it leaves!

Bob,
As a side note: I had the pleasure of flying Swiss recently JFK-GVA and ZRH-JFK on two of their A330's (HB-IQD and HB-IQF). I was in economy class but they were both EXCELLENT flights. Swiss does a wonderful job, and if I ever have the chance to fly them again I won't pass the offer up. The MD-11 is one of my favorite birds, and I love the looks of them in Swiss's scheme. That aircraft coupled with Swiss's outstanding service would make for a good flight!

I flew on Swissair's MD-11 JNB-ZRH-JNB, I remember at the time it was the most uncomfortable Economy seat I've ever flown on. But the ticket was free, so I won't hear a word said against SR. I'm flying LX's 330 to Boston in December, I hear those seats aren't the most comfortable either, but I'll give them a try.

My first MD11 flight was on my last Swissair flight (SR116 ZRH-MIA). Got an upgrade to Business class  Smile I will be flying on the MD11 next December to New York.

ConcordeLoss:

Swiss is fasing out their MD11 in favour of the A340s. The last two MD11s will leave the Swiss fleet by next Summer.

Hi!

I'm also one of the lucky ones that flew the SWISS MD11 last December. My flight was a long one, ZRH/LAX but I must say that I had a great time all way to California. The service was good, the plane was in excelent condition ( HB-IWM ) and very, very powerfull. I recall when we left ZRH the speed was fantastic and after beeing airborne that nice and tight left turn is awsome. I was sad that it was cloudy and we couldn't see Kloten. Then all way to LAX everything went smooth, we saw some parts of Ireland, Canada and finnally USA. The arrival to LAX was in the middle of a big storm ( something really unusuall in California ) so our pilot adviced us that instead of landing over LAX we had to aproach by the Pacific ocean ( that was different.... ), so we started to lose all the visibility until the last 1 or 2 minutes, we saw the ocean running under, we lost again visibility and then the landing - due to those terrible weather conditions the landing was actually quite hard - our pilot was a great professional, we touched first really hard but we lost contact and had to get it latter, this time a great one with a lot of control from the pilot, really a great control.
I'll never forget my flight with SWISS MD11 and it's already history for me, HB-IWM is out of service and from December on SWISS will start with the 343, I'll be flying back on December 15th. in the new Airbus so I consider myself very lucky to have flown the MD11 before beeing retired.

It has been occasionally rumored that SWISS will be acquired by Lufthansa, which makes sense in terms of culture and fleet composition. However, it would be great to see them continue to operate independently as their service is distinctive and superb, exactly what you'd expect from Switzerland.

I would like also to receive a lecture on that take over that "makes sense in terms of culture".
Only if it's because of the language I presume, and even that swiss is not german!

Do you think the A343 configuration will be as comfortable as the A330 one?
I personally am not a big fan of the A340, therefore quite disappointed regarding Swiss' withdrawal of its Md11s, but if Swiss keeps up with its impeccable service, the A343 might be quite a good investment after all.

Hi!

According with what SWISS says the 343 will have more space than the MD11. The configuration is smaller, the MD11 is 2-4-3 and the 343 is 2-4-2. One thing I know for sure, with the PTV's the 343 will have much better feedback from passengers than the MD11. But the MD11 was a great airliner in their time, we can't forget that they're around since the early 90's.

As far as the PTVs are concerned, that is definitely a plus and plays an important role in passenger comfort. However, even though the MD11 has an extra seat, i still think they are more spacious than the A343. I have flown AF A343 SFO-CDG many times in coach class and despite the fact that there are only 2 seats on the sides, i found it quite uncomfortable. Just my opinion, but we ll see, id definitely want to give it a try.

Hi!

I've looked to SWISS homepage about the new 343 and their seats, what SWISS says is the new seats are thinner so they'll give extra space for your legs. I can give you some feedback on that when I fly the SWISS 343 in mid December from LAX to ZRH. I personally like better the 2-4-2 arrangement, but that's because I have wife and 2 boys. We reserved 2 rows on the 2 seat lines, and that's great because I and my wife can go with one of our sons each and we don't need to ask anytime the 3rd. passenger to move out, specially if he is in the aisle seat. That was the problem we had when we flew the MD11, we were in the 3 seat row. But technically talking I'm sure the 343 will not have the same amount of power the MD11 had!!!

CV990,

That is indeed a great advantage of the 2-4-2 configuration. I had the same problem with my family (of 4) when we took the 747s, and since i always wanted a window seat, someone else sat separately(usually my dad) Let me know how the Swiss 343 flight is, i ll be looking forward to some feedback.

I will indeed give you the feedback when I fly it. It's gonna be great to pass about 12 hours in that nice airplane with that excelent service and now with PTV's with plenty of films to see!

Hey guys, im sure ill be fueling the A330 Next week so ill let ya know about that if no one else does. It really upsets me about the MD-11's leaving, i understand why they are getting ride of them in a way but those things look like brand new....everything was clean. The wings, where the engine exhaust normally changes the colors of the wing to a nasty black from the soot was totally clean. I would eat off that thing if i had food. It just amazes me how well the international carrers take care of there aircraft comparred to US carreres. SWISS and LH's aircraft are SPOTLESS....always in good condition. Same with Most of Korean Airlines 777's those are normally really nice to.

Although Swiss only flys the A330-200 and the MD-11 i hope the very last flight of the MD-11 is out of ORD so i can enjoy seeing it. Will they be sending the A343 here after the MD-11?

The A343 will be operating into ORD pretty soon! MD-11 HB-IWE will be the last one to leave the fleet - in June 2004.

Unique et al.,

Will the A343 be replacing the 332 indefinitely? Personally, I like the Swiss A330 more than the A430, and as I flown on Swiss/Swissair (from ORD, of course) often in the past and will likely fly with them in the future, I'd rather see the 330 at ORD than the 340, though the 340 would be nice to mix it up once and while...

Md11lover,

Thanks, I probably shoud have clarified. I see now that my post can be misleading. I realize the A330s are not going anywhere and that the MD11s are being retired; what I meant to say was, are the 330s going to be replaced at ORD by 340s.

@RiverVisualNYC: As Gerardo said: A take over by LH would not make sense at all in term of culture. The Germans and the Swiss do have quite a different culture (in Switzerland we don't only speak German but also French and Italian). But this story is over. Swiss is now member of Oneworld and it is going to have a strong partnership with BA. It is not unlikely that BA and Swiss will merger in a few years (or better said that BA will take over Swiss).

I flew ATL-ZRC in '98 on a MD11 when Biz class was evolving on Swissair, just days before SR111 went down. It was a great experience ! Nice a/c. I sure miss Swissair! Swiss doesn't even serve ATL. Bummer!

Flew ZRH-SFO-ZRH in economy back in 1999, quite exactly one year after SR111.

Nice flight with good service, though there were some strange feelings aside, since the reasons of SR111 going down were not recovered until then...

Like the MD11 a lot, especially their wings (that's what I call flaps!!) -- but sadly it seems there may soon be a higher number of DC10s still flying than of their successors...

Hi guys!

I've had the privilige of flying SWISS' MD-11 twice. First trip was to Miami last year (that route has since been changed to A332's). That was my first long-haul flight with Swiss and it was great. I love the MD-11's, combined with SWISS' excellente onboard service truly made for an unforgettable experience. On the return flight I used my miles to upgrade to business class and that was truly amazing. The portable DVD players they handed out were very cool.

The second time was on the very long flight ZRH to GRU (Sao Paolo). I think that is the longest route flown by the LX MD-11's. Anyways, it was really fun being on the MD-11 for 11 hours. Both the outbound and inbound flights were packed, but I was able to get the bulkhead seats so I had plenty of room.

Overall, SWISS is my favorite airline and I wish them the best of luck! I will be flying them to Miami again in January.

Cheers,
Patrick

I have been lucky enough to fly the Swissair aand Swiss MD-11's in Business and First as well as in the cockpit for a few takeoffs and landings roughly 30 to 40 times in the past 4 years.

Although the MD-11 does have a slight upwards angle during cruise flight I have always found it to be extremely stable and confortable.

Definately my favorite!

By the way on October 4th I flew ZRH-BKK-SIN on the 2nd A340 of the Swiss fleet (HB-JMB), coach and business. Great plane, very nice business class seats but extremely tight economy. Video screens and not visible due to the angle I hope they will change this soon.
