Q.TO SwissBrazil Concern 707 RG.

Sun Nov 09, 2003 3:38 am

Hello Fred,

I have a VARIG time table dating from 1974 showing the 707s starting from Congnhas all stopping in Galeao before flying to Europe or USA .

Can you confirm Congonhas could welcome the 707 even for very short trips ( SAO-RIO ) ???

many thanks

Hello Dennis,

Sorry, just saw today your post.. I'm not sure the 707 ever operated out of CGH, I will try to find out about it and revert...

take care,
Rgds,
Fred

What happened to CGH intercontinental flights until GRU was inaugurated in 1984:

Flights "left" CGH to GIG, usually on 737's, then from GIG to the international destination on the widebodies. The timetable might show the 707 as this was the aircraft used on the international leg of the flight.

I flew CGH-GIG-MIA and JFK-GIG-CGH in 1979-1980, and the short leg was on 737's. When we arrived at GIG, we would usually be bused directly to the widebody (in my case it was the DC-10). On the return, the same thing, and we passed customs in CGH.

I heard some rumors that once a DC-10 landed at CGH, but I don't know much more about that. It was certainly not a scheduled passenger flight.

Kempa: that's right, I also boarded a couple of times in CGH on 737's to GIG and then onto the longhaul... all under the longhaul flightnumber.
WOW, a DC10 in CGH???? Loooot's of braking on landing for sure, the biggest A/C I saw myself there was the regular VASP A300, always 'low & slow' on approach  Wink/being sarcastic

Kempa and SwissBrazil...

No..the DC10 never landed in CGH, but when VASP got delivery of their first one (early 90's) they made a fly-by over the runway. The biggest plane that landed there was the A330-200 prototype (on a demo to TAM) and the VASP DC8-73 (for maintenance). Nowadays we still have some occasional VASP A300 visiting the field, again for maintenance.

Back in the 60's VARIG used to fly with CV990 out from Congonhas, mostly CGH-VCP-GIG-etc.

Many flights were also routed over Campinas (VCP) which must have been a hell of a place for spotting a couple of decades ago.

I remember that for some time after GRU was inaugurated, some of the foreign carriers still used VCP, because of some rule that GRU could only be used by non-Brazilian carriers if it was the terminus of a flight. I remember going to VCP in the mid or late 80's to get my cousin who arrived on a KLM flight. That was a long drive...

Oh yes, believe me, I lived 7 years there ('82-'89), and spent MANY weekends on the airport/tarmac & cargo buildings (Swissair) to see all SR DC10/B747 (yes, 3 x we had a SR B747 visiting VCP), LH B742, KL DC10/B742, Caledonian DC10, AF B747, AZ DC10 & B747, etc etc... wow, nice times back then  Wink/being sarcastic
