Why Did British Airways Withdraw Some 777s?

Sun Nov 09, 2003 9:07 am

Does anyone know why British Airways decided to withdraw some of their older 777s from service?

I remember hearing about this a while ago. They said they would withdraw some of the older, original 777-200As powered by GE90s. Is it because they want to standardize their fleet with only the 777-200ERs?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but only 3 777s are being withdrawn, correct?

G-ZZZA, G-ZZZB, and G-ZZZC.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

G-ZZZD and G-ZZZE were withdrawn from BA service and operated for Khalifa for a short time. G-ZZZA, G-ZZZB and G-ZZZC all remain in service for British Airways. Why they were withdrawn is beyond me but i think there could be a 9/11 factor in there?

I think it is about 7 777s which were withdrawn. The issue was not just the engines but the designation. Those that were pulled were 777s of the 'A' market designation (ie shorter range) compared with the 'B' market 77s (which became IGW then ER) which are generally more flexible. Those 'A' market 777s served Middle Eastern routes but after 11 September 2001 it was felt that the decline in the market no longer justified using those planes. 2 went to Khalifa of Algeria and that soon went bust, thus they were sent to Germany where, as far as I know, they still remain.

Okay thanks for that.

And in the above photo, G-ZZZD is missing it's engines. Were these re-engined specifically for Khalifa?

As far as I know, British Airways is still flying 777s and even 747s to all it's Middle Eastern destinations that were served with 777s and 747s before 9/11.

Cairo, Dubai, Jeddah, Riyadh, and Kuwait are all 747s/777s.

Over the past year, BA has upgraded all ME routes from a mix of 767s and 777s to all 777s and one 747 (BA125/124, LHR-BAH-LHR).

ZZZA, ZZZB, and ZZZC are mainly used on those routes, but occasionally make special appearances on North American routes, most commonly on BA225/224 LHR-IAD-LHR.

Why do I have this feeling that BA may recall G-ZZZD and G-ZZZE back to BA service now that the world economy is making improvements? Despite the fact they're not "ER" planes, they still have enough range to fly routes from LHR to the US East Coast.
