Swissair/Swiss Flights?

Wed Nov 12, 2003 5:39 am

I have two questions. First, did Swissair or Swiss every fly to SFO? I know they fly to LAX. If they did, why did they cease the service? If not, how come, I think it has potential.
My second question is, to what destinations did Swissair operate its A310s.
If i recall, they operated them to Africa, but is that all?

Hello Md11lover

Yes, Swissair operated to San Francisco. However the ZRH-SFO-ZRH flights were cut due to economical reasons.
There were several discussions on this forum about the SWISS flights to Los Angeles too. Although the route has potential it is losing a lot of money so I don't see LX to expand service to California soon...

You are right, the A-310 operated to Africa but also to North America (BSL-EWR-BSL was operated by A-310s in an early stage).

I hope this helps!

Cheers,

Swiss ceased the ZRH-SFO-ZRH only this year.
Swissair used their A 310 on high density routes in Europe for example to LHR. As already RJ100 said they also used it to Africa, Middle East (Tel Aviv) and also to the US (BSL-EWR and later ZRH-EWR, before the 330 came).

Yes Swissair served SFO for a short while.

Daily operated by an MD-11

Swissair # 108
Zurich - San Francisco
4:20pm - 7:00pm

Swissair #109
San Francisco - Zurich
9:25pm - 5:25pm

As far as the A310's go, as someone mentioned before, they operated mostly to the Middle East and Africa. Trans Atlantic they operated BSL-EWR & ZRH-EWR. Austrian Airlines for a time also operated an A310 ZRH-IAH with a Swissair flight number till Swissair launched its own flights with A330's once these two airlines split.

ZRH
are you sure about the SFO flights cancelled only this year? I had in my mind, that it was already Swissair who cancelled those flights back in 2000 or 2001 but I'm sure, that Swiss it self never went to SFO on schedule flights.

A flight on the Swissair A310 from ZRH to LHR was my first flight I have ever done. Swissair also used it on flights to CAI, KWI, THR, IST, BEY, JED, RUH, TLV, AUH, DXB etc. (meaning mainly mid-haul flights)

Was ATL also scrapped due to economical problems?

Hey,

Swiss never flew the route, it was dropped with Swissair's demise. I know Swissair flew the route for quite a long time, but the yields didn't really follow (more of a tourist destination than business).

Hi!

I confirm that at least during 2002 SWISS was not flying SFO, otherwise I've choosen SFO instead of LAX. I still think LAX is a great route for SWISS and I think with the operation by the new 343 SWISS will have a better turnover. When I flew LX40 last December the plane was full!!!

@AviationMaster: I think ATL was dropped mainly because Delta and Swissair ended their partnership.

Thanks for the response, makes sense, was ZRH-ATL profitable for Swissair? I flew ZRH-ATL-ZRH about 6 times and it was always full.

Hello again

Hard to tell but I think in good (economical) times ZRH-ATL was profitable for sure. I remember during the 90s there were so many passengers flying SR via ATL...

Good old times...

Swissair had two types of the A310:

A310-200
This oine was used for European flights - off the top of my mind, I believe they flew to London, Stockholm (sat in that one!), Istanbul, Athens, Frankfurt and probably others

A310-300
This one was used on intercontinental routes. Again, I recall them flying to (at different periods of times):
Montreal, Newark, pretty much everywhere in Africa except Johannesburg, all of the Middle-East destinations, Delhi, and surely it did some stand-ins on European flights (London, Munich)
Best Business Class: Royal Brunei. Best Economy: Singapore Airlines. First: please send money first!

Hey,
guys I've read a couple of you saying that flights have been full when you've taken them. This really does not mean a route is profitable at all, the yields are the most important thing but details like airport costs, number of connecting passengers, etc... can easily make a route unprofitable. Therefore only the airline really knows if the route is profitable and even then some airlines decide to axe profitable routes, which Swissair and now Swiss have done on numerous occasions.

I just remembered! Swiss never flew to SFO, but Swissair did. Im just not sure when exactly the service was ceased. How many A310s did they have in total? When were the 743 retired?

You are all right (Swisgabe and others) it was already Swissair which dropped SFO in 2000 or 2001 and Swiss never flew this route.

Hi!

SWISSAIR also flew the A310-300 to Lisbon quite regulary. I wouldn't say everyday but they operated LIS with the 300. I personally flew the 200 version from ZRH to LIS in 1987 - HB-IPD - and I had the previlege to visit and stay in the cockpit at least for half and hour, the crew was great!
