Non Rev With Virgin Atlantic

Wed Nov 12, 2003 1:18 pm

I am an airline employee and I have always wanted to fly with Virgin. I'm just wondering how many of you out there have flown non rev with Virgin Atlantic and what were your experiences? I am debating whether to go the cheap way and standby BOS-LHR or JFK/EWR-LHR or just buy a ticket. Any info or suggestions would be great!

I have nonreved on VS JFK-LHR-LAX in Upper Class. The service was spectacular and memorable. I remember I had to leave the plane before departure at JFK to make an important phone call and one of the flight attendants went with me to the gate area to see that I would make it back to the plane on time for an ontime departure. Onboard there was a choice of a massage or a manicure and a sit down bar to sit at and talk with fellow passengers. The best yet.

Flew VS LHR-MIA rtn in 1999 with family of four. G-VXLG. Was upgraded to Premium Economy (Upper deck) on the outbound on the strength of my wife's IATA travel agent's card. Rode on the cockpit jumpseat for take-off LHR and landing MIA. Third pilot, a female, was kind enough to offer me the centre jump seat with unobstructed view of the cockpit. Crew were extra nice, both cabin and cockpit. They exude Branson's image. Entertainment was the best I had see to date (probably much better today). Return flight was full and they only had one seat in Upper class and rest in economy. I chose to sit in economy with my family (what the hell was I thinking?) Economoy was as bad as any other charter airline (same 747-400). Food and service exactly the same as Premium Economy except for the seat.

Verdict: 10/10 exactly as I expected from VS.

Enjoy your flight.

Does VS upgrade its non-revs regularly / easily?

From the past few accounts, it seems that they do, just looking to get a confirmation ...

I never non-rev'd with VS myself, but friends of mine at BA always love to standby for VS flights because

a) they always take BA ID tickets
b) they regularly upgrade all ID tickets not just their own staff.

This is what I heard anyway.

I non-reved EWR-LGW with VS back in '00, and was treated very well by the crew. Upperclass was nearly empty, so my friend and I were given not only an upgrade, but a choice of where we sat in the cabin.
Service was excellent, food was okay, but I can't say enough nice things about the crew, they treated us like kings. I have heard much the same from other employees who have non-reved on VS. Great ride.

I've non-revved on VS three times. BOS-LHR 744, IAD-LHR 343, JFK-LHR 346.

BOS-LHR (G-VXLG) was very lightly booked in both Upper and Economy. It was kind of a zonal ticket, and I didn't get upgraded because they weren't catered for enough meals in Upper. 3 seats in Economy to myself, though.

IAD-LHR (G-VSKY) was about 75% booked with plently of open seats in Upper and Economy. The ticket was a station agreement we had with VS for IAD-based employees. Orig when I checked in, they gave me a Premium Economy upgrade, and also a lounge invite. Then when checking in at the lounge, a further upgrade to Upper. Wow. The lounge was fantastic. Upper Class also fantastic.

JFK-LHR (G-VSHY) was full... absolutely full. I checked in at the counter and was given Economy. At the gate, my name called, and given Premium Economy. Onboard the aircraft, named called again (and I thought I was getting the royal boot off the plane), but ended up being told to take an open seat in Upper.

So in short, I was put in the lowest class of svc available with open seats, except at IAD when they were being extra nice... and it was greatly appreciated.

Nice to see that the outstations are taking good care of other airlines staff.

At LHR and LGW things are done strictly by the book. Even VS staff are not entitled to Upper until they have done 3 years service and will not get it out of LHR (well not officially anyway). Other airlines staff have even been left behind when there are seats in Premium and Upper as they will not upgrade them, they wouldn't even upgrade the VS staff into Upper to accomodate the other airlines staff, as the VS staff were not entitled to it !!!.

So go VS on the Eastbound sector, but don't bother out of LHR/LGW.
