Delta L1011 Incident

Wed Nov 12, 2003 2:42 pm

I recently saw a photo hanging up at work of A Delta L1011 with an LD3 baggage can stuck inside the Engine intake. It looks as though the engine had been started while the can was in front of it and it had been sucked in. I was wondering anyone knows anything about this incident and where I could find more info and pictures of it.

What happened was that a person drove a line of carts with the containers between a taxiing 757 and the L10. The jet blast from the 757 blew the container off the cart and onto the tarmac and into the soon to be taxiing L10 which already had its engines running. The engine was replaced and repaired and the plane went on its way. The nose cowl of the motor was damaged and later repaired but the engine sucked in debris from the container and was internally damaged which necessitated a motor change. Just another day at the airport!!!

i could have sworn it was stagged for a training video (look at the webbing holding the container to the engine)

I heard the same thing...heard it was staged by the DFW base.

The bloody AA plane was a birdstike. I think it was a 767 in Paris. As for the DL L10 forget about the story about the incident being staged. I hope you are not calling me a liar because I was there. What would be the purpose to stage something like this? A damaged and delayed plane along with delayed passengers for just a staging. This happened at the airport during a live flight and not a Hollywood production. What webbing holding the canister to the engine? That webbing is supposed to hold the luggage into the canister.  Insane

It was not staged.....I helped change that engine. The engine would not have been damaged if the weren't for the straps (with buckles) on the container.
This plane is built to withstand anything... except a bad pilot.
