LTU........ DUS To CPT?

Thu Nov 13, 2003 4:41 am

I've heard that LTU are flying the DUS-CPT route!? I haven't got a clue as to why LTU are flying to CPT. Does anyone have any information on why LTU are flying here, Your comments will be greatly appreciated.

BTW R.I.P the 2 SAAF pilots who died today in Mpumalanga while doing training in their Impala Mk.1 suffered engine problems inflight and crashed. Both men died. RIP

SA006,

DUS lies in Europes most densely populated area (12 million people in the Ruhr-area alone). Trek and SAA used to fly there (SAA via MUC, but considered it for nonstop operations at one point) and Luxavia/Flitestar applied for traffic rights to DUS at one point.

South Africa, especially the Cape Region has become very popular with German tourists. LTU has been serving CPT weekly for some years, this year they improved their service to 3 times weekly with A330 -200. Thomas Cook (Condor) also started flying to CPT an Durban once a week with B767-300.

Thanks for replying. But I forgot to say one more thing. They're stopping the flights early next year. They started I think this month and are stopping either in January or February.

Mystery to me

What a coincidence, yesterday I saw "The Harald Schmidt Show" on German TV broadcaster SAT 1 (it is like the Jay Leno Show in the USA, a late night comedy show with talk guests).

The guest in yesterdays show was a German actress which married some guy from Cape Town. Harald Schmidt (who is obviously very interested in planes and airlines) asked her if she flew nonstop to Cape town or if she had to change the plane in Johannesburg, she told him that she flew with almost every airline to South Africa, but her most comfortable flight was on LTU because she could fly nonstop from Dusseldorf to Cape Town, without changing the plane in Johannesburg.

I think they fly in the winter season (in South Africa summer season) to Cape Town because many German tourists like to visit the country.

The schedule looks like that:

Dusseldorf to Cape Town:

LT 0674 Saturdays: 09:50 - 22:35
LT 0672 Mondays: 07:15 - 22:05
LT 0674 Wednesdays: 09:15 - 22:05

Cape Town to Dusseldorf:

LT 0675 Thursdays: 08:00 18:45
LT 0675 Sundays; 08:15 19:00
LT 0673 Tuesday: 08:15 21:10

Man, you are from South Africa! You should know that Cape Town is just beautiful! Reason enough?

It is also one of the winter tourism hot spots! They had this route before, es well as flights to Windhoek and Durban.

SA006,

well, the flight might be seasonal. There isn't so much demand for travel to the Western Cape region during your winter. Joberg is now an all year round destination where airlines shouldn't have difficulties filling their planes. But that was not always like that either.

By the way, looks like LT672 and LT673 make a stop at MUC, the flight times are approximately two hours longer than on the other flights and they have a different flight number. I couldn't check it exactly because for some reasons doesn't Amadeus work for me at the moment.

SA006, no offence!  Big grin
I've been to Cape Town a couple of times and I really love it. The LTU flight is definitely more focused on the German market. Who would like to go from Cape Town in the German winter to a village called "Duesseldorf"?

Lol.......I'm not offende Setjet  Wink/being sarcastic. Also I've just seen that their are numerous flights from Brussels to JNB on Sobelair? Q7701. Can anybody explain this and if so how long have they been flying here. I think its the same reason that LTU fly here for BUT its JNB not CPT. It seems my life's full of mysteries Big grin

Thanks

Setjet,

DUS is really good for shopping. You ought to see the Koenigsallee (Duesseldorfs shopping street) at least once in your life. And the surrounding Ruhr-area is one of the most exciting places I know.

But then again, you are, of course, right. It is very unlikely that masses of South Africans are booked on those LTU flights.

...and don't forget that Düsseldorf has "die längste Theke der Welt" (the longest bar in the world). It's a german saying as in the city center there is one pub next to another.
