New Masterplan For Beijing Airport . . . BIG!

Thu Nov 13, 2003 6:15 am

A joint venture team comprising NACO [Netherlands Airport Consultans], architects Foster and Partners, and ARUP engineers have been seleceted to prepare Beijing Airport [PEK] for the 2008 Olympics.

"The Rmb16,000 million (approx. US$ 2 billion) expansion of Beijing’s airport, currently the busiest in China, is required to handle the massive increase in passengers due to China’s entry to the WTO (World Trade Organisation) and Beijing’s hosting the 2008 Olympics. Its capacity will be increased from 27 to 60 million passengers per annum by 2015".

Found several renderings on NACO website:

That last rendering looks very impressive, especially when compared to the current airport layout:

If you look carefully, you can see the existing terminal as a very small section on the top half of the airport overview rendering.

Interesting times for aviation in China!

PS. Why are there so many BLUE roofs in that airport overview photo??

The new Terminals look like a hybrid between Chek Lap Kok and DFW Int'l. Would love to see the finished result!

Is ALL of that going to built prior to the 2008 Olympics? That looks like a quite a bit of expansion for an airport, even in China (where I'm sure they don't have any NIMBY problems... just look at the Three Gorges Dam  Smile ).

But seriously... is that a rendering of the airport in its ultimate phase?
