Airlines & Food

Thu Jan 06, 2000 7:27 am

On what airline can I expect a good meal, & which one would I not? What is your personal experience with airline food?
I have never had a bad experience with airline food, but so far, it's nothing to be excited of, either.

A neighbour of mine, who came back from London last month from a family visit, decided to try AA rather than British Airways. He told me about how terrible the food on his flight was. He chose a pasta dish, & it was served almost cold, & the sauce was so strong & smelled so bad he had to stop breathing to even try it. He didn't eat any of it. Everyone who chose this meal complained, even some of the flight attendants on board acknowleged how bad it was. Many ended up with no food because the other choice of dinner ran out. Yet he also told me that on a business trip to Buenos Aires with AA, the food was the best he ever had on an airline. Both flights were done in the Main (coach) Cabin. He was very surprised by this. Why the inconsistency? Was this simply bad luck? Do the airlines serve better food in certain routes, & worse on others?

Thanks in advance.

This topic is considered banal and I agree, however to answer your question, the best is Midwest Express, the worst is SWA (None).

One reason that the food from London to the US may have been worse than a flight from the US to EZE is because at London they will use a different catering company - whatever happens to be at the airport - whereas from the US they probably have their own catering company or at least contract to provide a certain consistent level of food.

IE Maybe the food out of London on all AA flights is bad because the catering company is bad, but maybe they have a good catering company at their US bases to make good, consistent meals?

Just a thought.

As ridiculous as this may sound to you, I say Continental. I've flown Continental a number of times between LAX and EWR. I was served either a breakfast or lunch, and every time, it was mighty tasty.
Of course, that could be because I knew a meal was coming, and didn't bother to eat before hand...
My favorite was on one such flight where for breakfast, we were served an egg and cheese omelette, home fries, a muffin, a bagel, sausage, and fresh fruit. I washed it down with some orange juice that tasted like orange juice, and of course my strange habit of drinking a Coke first thing in the morning. It was both delicious and satisfying.

what a deep debate...

food is good or bad according to the
own taste of passengers: I mean if you don't like fish
and all the meals served are made of fish, you're going
to say "Oooh AA is better than UA....because meal is
better", and so on..but just ask your neighbour about
he/she thinks over the meal, he/she appreciates it
maybe !! Secundly, meal onboard won't never be tasty
as you can find in a good restaurant because catering
food for a huge number of people is never tasty !!!!!!!!
Saying AA is better than CX or SQ is worst than UA is
a nonsense, it depends on the situation, your likes and
so on....

I've already flew coach or business class several times
and food depends on each time it's very
disgusting on the way to destination but very excellent
on the way back, and so on on the same company !!!!!

it depends also if you are in a charter flight or a scheduled a low cost or very good company,
and so on!

Anymore I am just thrilled to get anything in coach. I would rather have to pay like old PeoplesExpress and know I am going to have something than get nothing.

I sure wish Midwest Express would expand further into Southwest's territory. We need more quality choices down here. I am anxious to try that new Legend Airlines when it finally gets going.
