No Flaps Set In This Photo Of A300 Takeoff?

Thu Nov 13, 2003 9:47 pm

It looks like no flaps are set for take-off in the following photo. Shouldn't they be extended for takeoff?

Coincidentally I've experienced this type of TG A300 t/o at BKK myself and it also looked like no flaps were extended.

Hi SvenvdM,

Exactly this topic with the same photo was discussed a week ago in the tech/ops forum, that should answer your question:

Correct me if I'm wrong (I don't have any technical knowledge of this issue).

But if there is a lot of wind and/or the plane doesn't have a heavy load it might be possible that the captain didn't set any flaps.

If I were sitting behind the wing and noticed this I would be a bit scared. After the M80 crash in DTW where the NW crew didn't follow proper cabin procedure and the flaps and slats weren't extended I always watch the flaps/slats. I'm not a pilot nor qualified to know if they should be set but most of the time they are.

Cheers,
John

Its common practice - the A300s I've been on have never used flap when leaving Bahrain.
