Why No 777s And A380s For PIA?

Fri Nov 14, 2003 7:03 am

With a population of about 150 million people, a growing economy, and increasing transit traffic...How many of you think that Pakistan International Airlines should have invested in larger aircraft such as the A380 or the Boeing 777? They already operate 10 747s and 8 Airbus A300s. However, is that enough to keep up with the growth that is about to hit this region?

I think it likely that PIA would acquire additional 747-400s, probably second-hand, before they get A380s. They'll have to ramp up their growth slowly, they're not Emirates. But eventually, as the region's air travel builds, there may in time be a need for the superjumbo.

Short answer: Cash. Or rather the lack of it. Both PIA dn their owners the Govt are strapped for cash, perenially seeking extensions on their loan repayments. Unlike the other South Asian countries, the All the growth that you talk about has come through cash injections from foreign aid donors, and Foreign investment inflows are at an alltime low.

In this situation, Purchasing aircraft is possibly the LAST in their list of priorities.

The 777's were basically part of the payment that the Pakis received for the support they gave the Americans in their so-called "War on Terror". The 777's are a part payment for dumping the Taliban, a Paki creation.
