Airplanes And Music

Fri Nov 14, 2003 9:18 am

When A.net user "Wilcharl" made up a bling-bling song (that I actually thought was pretty cool  Big grin) in the CO advertisement discussion I started thinking about music that is about airlines and aircraft, unfortunately I don't know about many songs but there are two very good ones, "Philip Glass" with "1000 airplanes on the roof" and (although I'm not really in to 80's metal) "Saxon" with "747 (strangers in the night)" rocks.
What about you, do you know about any song worth mentioning ?

What thread are you talking about?

There are a few nice shots of an MEA A310 landing at CDG in the music video for U2- Beautiful Day

Not a song, but wasn't there a group called "Jefferson Airplane" or something? Anyways, I know they were before my time...

The Replacements' Waitress In The Sky is the ultimate f/a-basher .. good song too! Guster's Airport Song is good ... And the song of all songs: Motors' Airport!

Swedish rock band Kent, not too well known but awesome musicians, have a song called "747" and it is one of the most beautiful pieces of music Ive ever heard. The song is 7:47 minutes long, which is funny. Well actually it is only 3 minutes and then it just doesnt stop, it goes on and on, just instrumental and no lyrics.

Quote:
"Silent, like a whisper... so this is all we need, the fully airconditioned sound of speed"

The chorus is:
"We ran out of time / leave it all behind."

Oh, the cover is a 737. Whatever.

In the 70's and 80's,
getting photos of PSA-
at LGB, Peter,Paul and Mary's,
"Leaving On A Jet Plane" , was the
BIG NUMBER #1 hit. In fact, I think
it was the only hit they played.
Drove me crazy.

Here's another one:

Great blues tune;

B.B. King and Eric Clapton,

"Riding With The King",
has a TWA line in it.

ELO's, "All Over The World"
has a jet sound effect.

wow god speed you black emperor, and kent are excelent, sounds like I need to check out fly pan am.

Death Cab for Cuties first album was named: something about airplanes, which is a fine work of rock.

Rilo Kileys second album is named take offs and landings, theyre a little acoustic act on the same label Death Cab for Cutie is.

Also from Kent, Ohio, there is a band named party of helicopters, they make some prety good indie rock.

The number one misunderstood song
of all time.

"Eight Miles High", The Byrds

It was not about drugs. It was about a
727 ride. It was written aboard a 727
flight, according the members of the band.

well since my first song was a hit:

here is another one i wrote a few years back:

A long, long time ago I can still remember how
Those beautiful planes could make me smile
And I knew if I had my chance
That I could fly that DC-9
And maybe id be happy for a while.

But January made me shiver
With every webpage that I read
Bad news on the door step,
I couldn't take one more step,

I can't remember if I cried
When I read about the new company
But something touched me deep inside,
The day, the airlines, died. 4
So...

Refrain:
Bye, bye TWA Good Bye
Drove my Jeep to the airport but there was nothing to see
Them American Planes were all I could see
Singin this will be the day that I die.
This will be the day that I die.

Did you fly on the L-1011
And wasn't the service truly heaven
If the FAA tells you so...
And do you believe in first class service
Can TW First make you refreshed?
And can you teach me how to fly the 9?

Well I know that t was soon to end
Cuzz Joe Leonard was going to buy those men
I knew it couldn't be true
But I was part of his crew...

I was a lonely teenage broken' buck
With an Airtran hat and little Truck
But I knew I was out of luck,
The day, TWA Died
I started singing...

Refrain

Bye, bye TWA Good Bye
Drove my Jeep to the airport but there was nothing to see
Them American Planes were all I could see
Singing this will be the day that I die.
This will be the day that I die.

Now for 11 Months they have been TWA LLC
And silver planes they started to show
But that's not how it used to be,
When Carol Ichan was ripping of me
In his cheap old suit he was so mean
And a crook he was with Caribuh

Oh and while the king was looking down,
American stole his thorny crown 20
The courtroom was adjourned;
"No Monopoly: was returned

And while Leonard read a book on Mullins
Fortress northeast got hit real hard
And we sang dirges on that day
The day, TWA Died
We were singing'...

Refrain

Bye, bye TWA Good Bye
Drove my Jeep to the airport but there was nothing to see
Them American Planes were all I could see
Singing this will be the day that I die.
This will be the day that I die.

Helter Skelter in a summer swelter
September 11th was the day they came
Eight miles high and fallen' fast
It landed foul on the city .
The players tried for a forward pass
With America sat on the sidelines in a cast.

Now the half-time air was stinky perfume
Our sergeants played a marching tune.
We all got up to dance
Oh but we never got the chance.

As Bin Laden tried to take the field
The marching band refused to yield.
Do you recall what was revealed,
the day, TWA died?
We started singing'...

Bye, bye TWA Good Bye
Drove my Jeep to the airport but there was nothing to see
Them American Planes were all I could see
Singing this will be the day that I die.
This will be the day that I die.

Oh and there we were all in one place,
A generation lost in space
With no time left to start again.
So come on, Carol be nimble, Carol be quick.
Carols ass is stuck on a candle stick
Because fire is the devils only friend.

Oh and as I watched him on the stage,
My hands were clinched in fists of rage
No angel born in hell
Could have the helm of TWA

And as the flames climbed high into the night
To light the sacrificial rite
I saw Satan laughing with delight
The day, TWA, died.
He was singing'...

Bye, bye TWA Good Bye
Drove my Jeep to the airport but there was nothing to see
Them American Planes were all I could see
Singing this will be the day that I die.
This will be the day that I die.

I met a girl who worked for them
And I asked her for some happy news
But she just smiled and turned away.
I went down to the airport terminal
Where I'd seen the twin globes before
But the man there said the company couldn't fly

And in the streets the children screamed,
The lovers cried, and the poets dreamed.
But not a word was spoken,
The church bells all were broken.

And the three men I admire most,
David Nehilman, Herb Keller and Richard Branson
They caught the last train for the coast,
The day, TWA died
And they were singing'...

Bye, bye TWA Good Bye
Drove my Jeep to the airport but there was nothing to see
Them American Planes were all I could see
Singing this will be the day that I die.
This will be the day that I die.

They were singing'...

Bye, bye TWA Good Bye
Drove my Jeep to the airport but there was nothing to see
Them American Planes were all I could see
Singing this will be the day that I die.
This will be the day that I die.

Pl4nekr4zy,
There was a rock group that had the name Jefferson Airplane and I believe they were together during the 70s but I don't know if they had any aviation relation songs or titles.

Pink Floyd's "Learning to Fly" off of Momentary Lapse of Reason:

Into the distance, a ribbon of black
Stretched to the point of no turning back
A flight of fancy on a windswept field
Standing alone my senses reeled
A fatal attraction holding me fast, how
Can I escape this irresistible grasp?
Can't keep my eyes from the circling skies
Tongue-tied and twisted Just an earth-bound misfit, I

Ice is forming on the tips of my wings
Unheeded warnings, I thought I thought of everything
No navigator to guide my way home
Unladened, empty and turned to stone
A soul in tension that's learning to fly
Condition grounded but determined to try
Can't keep my eyes from the circling skies
Tongue-tied and twisted just an earth-bound misfit, I

Above the planet on a wing and a prayer,
My grubby halo, a vapour trail in the empty air,
Across the clouds I see my shadow fly
Out of the corner of my watering eye
A dream unthreatened by the morning light
Could blow this soul right through the roof of the night
There's no sensation to compare with this
Suspended animation, A state of bliss
Can't keep my eyes from the circling skies
Tongue-tied and twisted just an earth-bound misfit, I

The middle of the song has someone going over a check list with something like:
"Flaps set: 10 degrees
Brakes set
ready for departure..."

Gotta love the Floyd!

Best wishes,

Walking in Memphis by Marc Cohn (and now country group Lonestar as well)???

Put on my blue suede shoes
And boarded the plane
Touchdown! in the land of the delta blues
in the middle of the pouring rain

Sorry, couldn't help myself. Love that song!
