DAL Pulls 777 Service Out Of CVG

Fri Nov 14, 2003 9:40 am

Delta has pulled B772 service ouf of CVG in favor of B673s for trans-Atlantic flights. Does anybody have the inside scoop on what was behind this move? There was nothing like watching one of those babies rotate off the runway. I will surely miss that all-to-familiar low growl of the Trent 892 engines overhead too.

Delta always shuffles equipment around to meet capacity needs at various times throughout the year. I'm sure the 777 will be back at CVG at some point, but the 763's are probably an overall better fit for the market.

Will that be the case MSYtristar? From JFK almost all the Trans-Atlantic aircraft are 767-300ER's. I like DL but BA has a better deal. Better service in Y class and J class is cheaper with a full reclinable flat bed. Aybody know if this will change, I want to fly DL overseas but their service Trans-Atlantic is not at the top when other offer 777's and 747's with PTV's?

This is not to be a surprise.

DL's 7 or 8 777s will be effectively minus 2 for the traditional routes, as 2 a/c will be allocated for the ATL-NRT run, starting January 1. Also, soon a 777 will be on the ATL-LAX route.

This will be good for the CVG-CDG route as AF and DL can both operate their own flights, but having the CVG-FRA on a 777 was awesome, and for a while having a CDG and FRA flight on the 777 - two @ CVG was even better!!

Maybe in 2004 when they take delivery of some more 777, we will see it restored to CVG.

Frankly though, with the new FCO and AMS flights on 763, I am just thrilled for that. That has to be a factor in removing seats to Europe - as with the new flights in May, there will be a great jump with the 2 new routes.

Doesnt DL use B 772s for its JFK-LGW or JFK-CDG or JFK-FRA flights? If not Im surprised, as there is enough demand to warrant the B 772 of theirs plus this aircraft has a superior inflight product than its B 763ERs!!!

DL's 7 or 8 777s will be effectively minus 2 for the traditional routes, as 2 a/c will be allocated for the ATL-NRT run, starting January 1.

They currently have a total of 8, and three will be devoted to Asia.

The reason for the pullout was to centralize all remaining 777 ops to Atlanta.

CVG is gaining two new destinations next year making it one of only a handful of cities that have that many or more transatlantic destinations and by far the smallest city with that many transatlantic flights.
777's aren't needed in the winter and the switch to the 777 for NRT means they need to be more centralized. DL has only 8 large int'l widebodies after Dec 31, by far the lowest of any int'l airline anywhere. Unless the MD-11's come back, until a few more 777's join the fleet, or Delta takes delivery of the 7E7 (probably a good bet), the 767-300ER will be what you'll fly on Delta internationally.

Behramjee, Delta serves on MXP with an MD-11 and soon to be a 772, all the rest have 763ER service.

Delta is not taking any deliveries in 2004; they will take delivery of two 777s in 2005.

I don't see DL bringing back 777s to CVG anytime soon if ever. Much more cost effective like ConcordeBoy was saying, by concentrating all 777 crews to ATL. More traffic from there too than CVG on most routes.

As strange as it sounds...it takes 3 a/c to operate the ATL-NRT route daily.

It only takes two to complete the route daily

Just that the third Pacific-configured bird will be retained for a spare as well as possible maintenance rotation

AF picked up the slack, now they are flying a A340-300 in daily instead of the A330-200. So it kinda balances out with DL downgrading to a 767-300. I miss the tripple 7 too, but an AF A340-300 is a nice site a CVG too.

ConcordeBoy,
No, the route requires three aircraft. Once the B777 take over ATL-NRT, the third aircraft will do an ATL-LAX turn. An additional aircraft will remain as an operational spare.

BTW, check out the occuptation of the person who made that statement - I wouldn't be arguing with him  Big grin.
