Mexicana Leaves Star Alliance

Mexicana Airline Leaves Star Alliance
Mexicana de Aviacion, Mexico's second-largest airline, said Thursday it will leave the global airline partnership Star Alliance.

Mexicana's departure was the result of a decision to end its code-sharing contract with UAL Corp.'s United Airlines under a new business strategy that may include a future partnership with another carrier.

"We now have the freedom to look for the best option," company spokesman Adolfo Crespo said in an interview. "A lot of companies have approached us, so we'll look for the best choice to increase our destinations."

The board of Star Alliance, the world's largest airline partnership with 14 carriers not including Mexicana, agreed at a meeting in Germany to maintain code-sharing and related joint-services between Mexicana and all Alliance members except United.

Mexicana and Star Alliance said in a joint press release that the Mexican airline will also continue offering airport VIP lounge access to frequent flyers of the other 13 airlines. They will also be able to accrue miles or redeem awards on Mexicana flights to 59 destinations across the Americas, mostly Mexico and to 17 cities in the United States.

Mexicana's membership in Star Alliance will be formally terminated March 31. Its code-share contract with United, established seven years ago, will expire Dec. 31.

Having recently revamped its fleet with Airbus aircraft, Mexicana operates close to 60 airplanes, including 10 manufactured by Boeing Co.

The company, which controls about a quarter of the commercial airline traffic between the United States and Mexico, expects to announce details of its new business strategy early next year.

Mexicana's main competitor is sister company AeroMexico. Both airlines form part of state-controlled holding company Cintra, which plans to privatize both carriers when market conditions improve.
