I think the best US airport is MHT (OK, so I'm biased). But considering it's growth, ease of use, and prices, I think they're definatly near the top, if not #1.

Now I do know TPA has had the top ranking for the past several years if my memory serves me correctly.

Best US: Toss up among many in my book. SEA, SLC, PIT & MCO
Worst US: IDA (Idaho Falls), ORD, DFW, AVP (Scranton/Wilkes-Barre)

Only been through one Canadian airport, YVR; was a great experience though.

I think by far, you have to go with YVR. It has both solid North American and overseas service.

I like Denver too, but Denver has very little overseas service (FRA and LHR).

DFW, BOS,& MEM are three pretty sad airports in terms of facilities and overall appearance.

MCO, DEN, & PIT are pretty much top-notch facilities in every category.

From my experience...

United States: Northwest's new Detroit World Gateway (DTW). Very easy to get around as compared with their old jungle of terminals.

Seattle used to...I wouldn't cast my vote for Seattle as being the best. When the remodeling is done...then let's talk. Just my opinion, btw...

I'm kind of partial to Charlotte/Douglas CLT.

Canada: My vote goes to Vancouver YVR. Good airport. Spectacular viewing from all over the whole place.

Wait until the new terminal in YYZ is open. I don't know that it will beat YVR.

Best: EWR, BWI, PBI, SNA

EWR: The newly refurbished Terminal C is great. It has great restaurants stores and is easy to navigate. Also my home airport.

BWI: I felt BWI was very modern. From the parking garage with lights that tell you what spots are available to the check in and terminal.

PBI: I've always like PBI, don't know why though. Maybe just because it's small and easy and you still get to see the wide bodies.

SNA: Only been to SNA once but all I remember is how easy it was to get from check in to the gate.

Worst: JFK, ORD, TUS

JFK: JFK is just a zoo. It is horrible to get around and a pain in the neck to get to.

ORD: I feel that O'Hare is just a monster of an airport. Again hard to navigate if you are not from the Chicago Land Area.

TUS: Although TUS is small and very easy to get from check in to the gate it is flat out boring. I got there early to try and stand by for an earlier flight which didn't work. I was so bored. No interesting aircraft other that the occasional military movement and the aircraft that did come in were few and far between and nothing exciting. I guess when you are used to EWR a small airport like TUS is very un eventful.

The best Canadian airport and arguably the best airport in North America is YVR. I live in Vancouver, and on my somewhat frequent trips to the airport as a passenger or as offering a ride to someone else, the beautiful architecture and wide open viewing spaces always amaze me. The way that Native American art has been incorporated into the design of the building gives a calm and restful atmosphere.

Most of my experiences are in the international terminal, which I recently noticed has undergone even more improvements. Although I'm certain they exist in other airports and I just don't know where, this is the first North American airport I have ever used (and I've been in plenty) that is equipped with glass/clear jetways so that as you board the aircraft you have a wide open view of the aircraft, the terminal and the entire airfield. This may only be in the international terminal.

However, as far as the domestic terminal the mini-mall shopping area is fantastic. Sometime if you are there, take some time to study the intricate tile design on the floor in the domestic terminal before the security and AIF checkpoints.

I may be biased since its my home town, but the recent improvements at PDX qualify it as one of my favorite US airports for its ease of use, pacific NW architecture and the giant glass and metal awning that spans from the termianl to parking garage keeping the rain out. I am also a large fan of TPA, MCO, DEN, and ABQ for a small airport. As far as Canadian airports go YVR is definitely the best, especially the international arrivals hall with all the native ameriacan artwork. (maybe best airport in north america. I know its off topic but I absolutey love the new kuala lumpur aiprot in malaysia

In the USA, from the architectural standpoint, I would say JFK, LAX and IAD are at the top. From the standpoint of ease-of-use, the most user-friendly airport I have been in was PDX.

BTW would any of you know if there is room at MEM for a new terminal to be built to replace the existing facility? Also how close is MEM to the city center?

boston has the best controllers in the country, 99% of the time they run 2 runways and they very rarely impliment speed restrictions. now the alley setup at the airport at terminal C has much to be desired. I have gotten in early many times only to sit and wait for the alley to clear and end up like 15 min late. (the alley i'm talking about is located between were the airfrance widebodies sit and the american heavies.

Best U.S. Airport probably SEA or TPA. Worse hands down
SAT.

Best Canadian airport YVR. Worse Canadian airport
Hands down top winner goes to YUL. Your transported

Tough choice.. but, my favorite is probably KTPA, Tampa International, wow that is an awesome airport. Second favorite is definetly DTW's NWA Worldgateway Terminal.

I also like this airport, even though this airport is small, KFNT, Flint Bishop, its very nice airport, very clean, very small, which makes it super easy to get around in! The checkins right at the front door, you walk up some stairs, walk 100 feet and your at the gate. Its awesome too because the terminal is open to everybody, until you get to the circular part ( the farthest south end of the terminal which holds all the gates ), then they have security there.

I was picking up a relative arriving from MDW into FNT on Chicago Express ATA Connection, and i was waiting in the terminal, its very nice cause you have a view of the main runway from both directions, so you can easily see planes landing, departing, etc. I had a nice shot of that Saab 340 ATA that my relative flew on pulling into the ramp right next to the window i was sitting at, real cool airport!

Plus its like a get in-get out place. There are only a couple baggage carousels, but thats PLENTY for Saab's, 717's, etc. that come into FNT.

I always try to fly out of flint if the airfare is decent, but it depends on where im going. Airtran is nice to have here in FNT, thats for sure. A lot of people around where i live ( i live about 45 mins east of FNT airport ) fly out of flint, and love it, most go by Airtran or Delta though.

Have a look at Flint, next time you go to michigan  Big grin http://www.bishopairport.org/

YVR is nice, but I'll admit not having been there in a few years.

YEG is a confusing airport.... with a monsterous international hall which you can shoot a cannon off in at times because it's so empty.... meanwhile, the area WestJet uses is often very busy, and tiny... but I'll admit it's been some time since I've been around YEG as well. Oh, and YEG isn't actually in Edmonton.... it's in Leduc - a twenty-minute cab ride away.

YYC will be a nice airport, if they ever get it finished. They've only been working on it for 30 years.....  Big grin

YVR tops them all...

MIA and YQT fall short. MIA seemed dark and old...and at YQT you have a newer terminal with nothing to do...not bad for spotting, but really how many flights really pass by...

Worst: OKC, What a sh!thole. Dirty, dingy and boring.

I have not been to a Canadian airport yet.

GUESS WHO I'M VOTING FOR??? PVD!!!!! It's not perfect, but it's got a little of everything: looks nice, clean, great views (lots of glass) good variety of airlines and flights. The concessions could be a little better, but we're working on it. Anyway...

I can't say I have a worst (if I'm at another airport, that means I'm traveling, I love travelling so, how could I hate any other airport?!) I must admit the old DCA terminal was bad and so was the old STT Terminal (old Hangar???). Last time I was at Key West and Carlsbad, I think the terminals were converted mobile homes!

Best: I will give it a tie between DEN and MCO. In the past few years, the experiences in these airports have been good. They also have attractive designs.

Worst: LGA due to congestion issues as well as poor ground transportation choices.

YUL used to be the pitts, but I've flown through there the last three years in a row and it's getting MUCH better. Traffic is still an issue. TPA is great. BOS, unless you're familiar with it is WAY too confusing. I like LAX, but it's just too conjested. Unless you are actually on the active taxiway, you can't taxi under your own power, you have to be pulled here, pushed there. Even though I live in ATL, departing isn't too bad, it's the arrivals that get you. Even not checking luggage(which I never do anymore). It takes on average, at least 45min to an hour to get out of there. Unless you're at the T gates. It's a big production and I dread it every time I land. TPA is my favorite.

I love the new YOW terminal and airport. I vast improvement over the old terminal. The new terminal has 'Canadian' written all over it; from the indoor waterfalls, to the copper that resembles the roof of the Parliament Buildings, to the natural stone and wood. Parking is a lot easier and more convenient AND cheaper than most other airports in Canada and the US. Airplane viewing is the best anywhere!! The whole side of the terminal is glass allowing you to view the ramps, gates, and runways from either the restaurants, departure lounges, or viewing area. The best part is that once people have crossed into the waiting/departure area, they can still be seen, and see, their relatives/friends (who would be in the viewing area); thanks in part to the abundance of glass.

For those interested, I have included a link for you to see the new and improved airport. http://www.ottawa-airport.ca/index-e.php

Goose,

YEG has two sections. Now they are connected through the co called Central Hall (Amazing facility.. Just flew to YYZ a couple days ago). The Internationl hall you are referring to is called the South terminal (occupied by AC and includes all flights to the US-NW, CO, AS, UA and HP). It's often busy in the morning

I've been to YEG, YLW, YYC, YUL, and YYZ in Canada, and YUL gets my vote for the worst.

USA

Best: ORD (US Terminal, architecturally pleasing, functional, lots to do, interesting) (runner up: ATL - simple design and just works)
Worse: MIA (Architecturally dull, crowded, hot, difficult to navigate but still one of the world's most interesting airports to spot planes)

Canada
Best:YVR (Nice design, interesting melding of Native Canada into the architecture, lots to do, nice mountain views.. functional) (Runner up: YUL - Easy to go through when things work according to plan)
Worse:YYZ (difficult to make connections in, too many terminals, at times over crowded, often long walks between gates... but a good functional airport if Toronto itself is your destination)

Best US:

EWR (Terminal A, B and C). Easy to get around from terminal to terminal and clearly marked signs (which are very helpful for travellers not familiar with the airport). Also, EWR used to be my home airport.

Worst US:

I don't have a "worst", but I do have some gripes about MIA.

This is difficult for me to say, because I see that there's some major improvement projects going on there at the moment AND it's my new home airport, but MIA has had me scratching my head in bewilderment several times over the past year.

Prior to moving down here, I visited a bunch of times and found the signage lacking in terms of aiding travellers not familiar with the airport (i.e. me!) with such simple things as what level ground transportation was on and where the rental car company desks were located in the terminal (I'm speaking about both AA's massive terminal(s) and Continental (H? - not sure, only flew them in there once).

The latest "gotcha" happened about a month ago. I looked up my AA flight to EWR on the net prior to driving out to the airport, saw that we were departing out of terminal A, so we parked right across terminal A in the Dolphin garage.

Got into the terminal and, lo and behold, no check in desks or E-Ticket boarding pass machines! Walked over to Terminal B - same thing! Ended up having to walk all the way to Terminal C (or was it D?) before encountering an E-Ticket machine.

Now, this last complaint isn't against the airport - it's more an AA issue. It just amazes me why they can't put in some E-Ticket machines in terminals A and B. For travellers entering the airport at Terminal A or B from the parking garage, taxi, etc, they have to walk all the way over to Terminal C or D just to check-in.

End of gripe and let me repeat - MIA is in the middle of some very ambitious upgrades and I'm looking forward to the day when I can list it as one of my favorite airports to use as a traveller.

From a spotter's perspective, it's top notch!

Despite being really small, I have to mention FCA (Kalispell, MT).

The airport staff is really helpful, the interior looks great and you're able to get a really nice view of the (few) parked airliners.

Also, ATC is usually pretty nice! =)

One airport that I forgot to add...

Maui! (OGG)

Good, clean airport, easy to get around, nice semi-outdoors check in area, TSA actually works ok there, and isn't the usual McDonald's-rejects that they employ.

I recall talking to someone from WestJet who said once they found it odd that YEG had built the International hall, yet it only serves so many people in one year - which was pretty close to the number of folks WestJet brought into YEG in one month. He mentioned being on a tour of the new facility with the head of the Edmonton Airports Authority, and that it was pretty much deserted at the time...... and every other time he's been through there.

No doubt there's traffic.... but I don't think it warranted building such a huge new terminal annex. I would think the money and time could have been better spent on a facility for domestic carriers - although I realize that AC has made moves in the past few years to reduce capacity at YEG and consolidate at YYC, turning YEG into more of a "spoke" for the major carriers, than a hub in some respects. It's still a valuable gateway to the north country.

Maybe it's an example of "if you build it, they will come" sort of thinking. I can't be sure.....

Goose,
West jet had been an opponent of expanding YEG. Now they have asked the Airport Authority to modify their plans to speed up the renovation of their section (The old north terminal built in 1963).

Also West Jet is mulling building another hangar at YEG. Another sign that they are planning more expansion.

Any airport could be deserted at times. The measuring stick is the rush time (morning and evening) not 2 in the afternoon.

Best American: Denver, very nice modren airport. Quite easy to connect. Great views.
Second Best American: Fort Lauderdale T1, Amazingly nice, modren, convinent, never very long lines ect

Best Canadian: Calgary, low fares, lots of transborder service, nice mix of regionals, charters (lots of British), and American. New Westjet area by far currently best terminal in Canada. B/C needs work. A is very adaquate and easy to connect in (Air Canada part)

Second Best Canadian: Vancouver, the westjet b concoruse is trash. But the other terminal areas (Air Canada part) and the international terminal are very nice.

Worst American: PHX T2, I hated it. When I went it was old and highly outdated. T4 is much nicer.

Worst Canadian: Ottawa old terminal. It was just a mess. Huge lines. Nothing to do or eat while waiting past security. Old and outdated. Needed quite a bit of refurbishment. Hopefully the new terminal (almost complete when I vistied Ottawa will be much nicer).

Second Worst Canadain: Montreal. Over crowded at all times then I visited. Poor and confusing gate system with one waiting area being used for three jetways. Ect.

BEST:
DTW- New NW World Terminal is stunning
DAB- Small but easy and modern
MCO- Very Scenic, although the checkpoint can backup
ATL- Out of the megaports, layout doesn't get simpler than this.

WORST:
MKE- Drab and disgusting
BDL- New terminal is nice, but the rest of the airport is very 70's
EWR- Ground operations are slow. However, APT is getting better

Best (USA):
1. Washington National. It's beautiful, has a great view, and a great location.
2. Salt Lake City. I think it's the most attractive hub airport in the USA.
3. Detroit Macnamara Terminal. A breathtaking improvement over the previous facility.

Best (Canada): Vancouver. By far the best in North America.

Worst (USA):
1. San José, California. Ugly and dark with long security lines.
2. Baltimore. Dark, cramped, and depressing. Lengthy and intrusive security, customs, and immigration.
3. Miami. Filthy, crowded, and long walks between connecting flights.

Worst (Canada): Toronto. Ridiculously confusing.

I like YYZ. Terminal 3 is really nice and modern. New Terminal 1, which I have been in is one of the nicest that I've been in. I can't wait for it to open.

In the US, I have been to only EWR and JFK. JFK Terminal 7 Arrivals was dreadful, although the departures was quite nice. It was like walking through a tunnel with no windows...

EWR was a little bit nicer, but the layout isn't very good.

EWR--Home airport, nice terminal C, and easy to get around.
MIA--Like the layout, and the airport hotel!
LAX--Ontime, nice AA terminal, large and in charge
MHT--Simple. Easy.

WORST: Canadian: Ottawa. I was there in 01' and there were hardly any shops, awkward check-in, and layout.

LGA: Plagued with delays, runways over water, airlines trying to compete too much (DL US and AA)

I had to throw my $0.02 in here guys.. I'm new to the discussion groups, so I just had to throw this in.

I've also been into the new Terminal @ YYZ and I can say that the GTAA has taken GREAT care into designing a functional, sleek, sexy (pardon the pun) airport terminal that is easily accessible, easy to understand signs, etc.

Just had to throw that in.

Thanks!

YVR for it's spacious areas, beautiful design, and fairly rapid acces.

YYZ: What can I say... terrible connector, confusing to the first time travellers, and a source of despair that I have seen on too many people that use it. No one is happy to connect from one terminal to the next. Terrible appearance, I don't care that they are opening a new terminal soon, I will change my mind when T1/2 are smoking holes in the ground and Twhatever is operational. Zero bang for the buck. Zero.

By the way, has anyone ever flown COA or NWA's RJ's out of NWA's new terminal in DTW? If you did then you probably walked through the underground tunnel.

I flew COA last year ( DTW-CLE, on a connection, then on the way back to DTW, i flew IAH-DTW, i arrived at the new NWA terminal, Concourse B )... and i had the chance to walk through this awesome underground tunnel.

Anybody ever go underneath that underground tunnel before at NWA's new terminal? The tunnel links travelers between the main NW terminal to concourse B and C ( i believe those are the concourse labels ) ( Which are RJ gates, COA gates, etc. )... wow that tunnel is awesome!

For a moment, while walking through with changing lights on the walls and all, and nature-sound effects, i thought i was a universal studios or something!

I guess I have been spoiled by MCO and its modern airside trams and lush foliage, but I was at ORD this week and really thought it was dingy, disorganized and the TSA staff was the rudest I've encountered (I was in terminal 3, perhaps the others are different) ... In any event....

Best US:
MCO
BWI

Worst US:
ORD
MIA

Have a great day!  Smile

Best CDN Airport.. I vote for YVR.
Mainly because of the diversity in traffic, Somewhat of a balance between European and Asian carriers plus the awesome scenery.

Best CDN Airport for passenger servies.. Calgary YYC!!
I'd say YYC is one of the best Pax friendly airports in the WORLD!!
Enornous amounts of food joints, arcades, 1/10 scale shuttle craft, open space, shitloads of windows.
I have never seen so many Tim Hortons littered throughout the entire terminal complex. Fountains are a nice add on as well as comfy LEATHER Seats littered like candy in the D wing..
Its a passenger Haven!

YYZ is a rough airport. I was astounded with the transportation connection between the 3 terminals. All them overpasses, flyovers, and lane changes got me sleepy during my 10 minute ride from T3 to T1. And T3 is the only nicest part of YYZ, despite not having a Tim Horton's anywhere in sight.
For traffic and diversity, yeah its a heaven for aviation buffs like me and you..
