I wouldn't be surprised. Good for them.
The Far East-Oceana market from BEY is controlled by EK and MH, Thai would be a good addition. Hope it's true.

AirxLiban,

I don't think MEA would start a long haul route to Asia soon, before it starts the Montreal route.Montreal is the kind of long haul MEA has to consider,if every to fly long haul routes.
Besides, why screw Thai?A new airline serving BEY wouldn't hurt!

Hmmm??? Where'd you hear this Yegbey01?

While I have never heard of any Asian airlines looking to Beirut service, I'm sure there are some that are.

But Thai Airways isn't a very big airline compared to others like Cathay Pacific, Korean Air, Singapore Airlines, JAL, etc.

I'd expect those to start BEY service before Thai.

I think I heard vaguely in the past (this was about 2 years ago) that JAL was looking at BEY. But nothing materialized yet and who knows if it ever will.

I'm sure Singapore Airlines has considered BEY.

Anyways, if you could provide us with a little more details, that'd be great.

I just spoke to Chadi and he told me that a few months ago, Minister Mikati was saying that a lot of Asian airlines have been asking about using Beirut as a transit stop.

Perhaps Thai is one of them? They are considering opening a route somewhere west and would like to make a stopover in Beirut?

This is interesting....

I have not heard such news here in Thailand. TG are interested in opening up more destinations in China, India and Russia. If TG will fly to Beirut, it will be very interesting.

Could happen. Beirut's a very attractive destination with a very mobile population - the Hong Kong of the Middle East.

JAL is a likely one, they used to have a daily service to Japan before the civil war and there seem to be links between the two countries, although I'm not entirely sure why. Japanese terrorist groups used to be based there during the war, and there was some kind of diplomatic scuffle between the two countries a few years ago which might have been a fallout of that or something similar.

This is the piece that I picked up. Don't have any details though

"Thai Airways will launch four direct flights a week from Dubai to the southern Indian city of Chennai from October 26. These will be on Mondays, Wednesdays , Fridays and Sundays. Thai covers five destinations in the Gulf including Dubai, Muscat, Abdu Dhabi, Bahrain and Kuwait. It plans to add Beirut, Amman, Riyadh and Dammam."

There are way too many new destinations in that paragraph to be materialized in the near future.

Has Thai ever had regular services to BEY? Maybe pre-war?

OD720,

I don't think Thai has ever served Beirut, but I could be mistaken.
