Northwest Airlines 747-200 At HKG For How Long?

Sun Nov 16, 2003 2:07 pm

Hey all!

With the rapid withdrawal of Northwest's 747-200 from passenger serivce, I was just wondering if anyone here knows for how long NW will continue to service HKG with the 742? I believe HKG & Japan are the only to Asian regions that see NW 742 service at the moment (pax of course), with other destinations like SIN, PEK, PVG, etc. being serviced with the DC-10, 752, etc.

My guess is they will be gone from HKG by year's end? Or early next year?

I'm getting a new camera soon & hope to capture the gorgeous NW 742 at HKG.

It's beautiful!! Their A330-300s are great, but the 747-200 is simply in a league of its own, and is far more graceful in the sky.

NWA should have ordered A 333s for their transatlantic operations and a bunch of A 343s/346s for their transpacific operations. Their A 333s are gonna struggle doing the nonstop ex B 742 and DC 10-30 flights because of its smaller range limit.

The A 333s would have replaced all DC 10 transatlantic flights from DTW-MEMPHIS and JFK where as the A 346 would have been an ideal replacement for its B 742 operated transatlantic and transpacific flights and the A 343s would have been an ideal replacement for its DC 10 transpacific flights and MSP-FRA/CDG/AMS.

Can NWAs A 333s fly nonstop without any restriction MSP-FRA?

NW has ordered 24 333's and 10 of the longer range 332's which are better suited to the Pacific market than the 333.

Can NWAs A 333s fly nonstop without any restriction MSP-FRA?

Easily. AC operates their 333 on the longer YYC-LHR already.

I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

NWA modified their order for the A330. Initially they were going to be all 333s, now its going to be mixed, 333s, and 332s. The company converted the order with Airbus. I still think they should have gone with the 777. Imagine that ! A replacement for both the 742s and D3C (our internal code for the DC10-30) Management moaned about how they couldn't earn money with the 777s. What a shock that every other carrier can make money with it.

I am so confused why US company buys Airbus 330 rather than US products Boeing planes?

I thought EI used the 332 exclusively on DUB-LAX?

The captions in the photos are wrong - NW has NO plans to fly the A333 across the Pacific, nor do they plan to fly the A332 to HKG. When the B742 are retired, a B744 will be the likely replacement. FYI: HKG is the primary maintaince facility for NW's B742F fleet, and it does a lot of work on the B742 as well.

Management moaned about how they couldn't earn money with the 777s. What a shock that every other carrier can make money with it.

No, they claimed the A330 was a more economical aircraft across the Atlantic than the B777. They insist they'll consider the B772/B773 when considering a B742 replacement. However, the A332 is capable of virtually any Pacific route NW would consider (from both coasts of the USA) so it may very well indeed fly alongside the B744 to form NW's Pacific fleet.

You have to remember that NW had an existing order for the A330, received sweet cancellation terms for the A340 order and stood to lose a lot of money if they didn't re-select the A330.

It's called open and free markets. Lu, I notice that you're from China. Your country is getting better, but it has a long way to go to completely open the Chinese economy...not that the USA is innocent in this regard. Patriotism should be no factor when making sound business decisions.

In the case of NW, they placed a joint 343/333 order in the early 90's and kept deferring it. The 343's were cancelled and the 333 order increased. NW had already ordered the 320 at that time & hence commonality would have been a factor.

In the case of US, they had a very poor relationship with Boeing over a cancelled order which no doubt played a part in driving them to Airbus...their 333 fleet has commonality with the 32x fleet.

Actually, a sister of a friend is a HKG based FA with NW and next year she will go to the US for A330 training in preparation for the A330 coming to Asia.

The A332 will fly within Asia (NRT-SIN, for example). However, NRT-HKG is alleged to be among NW's more profitable routes (SARS aside). I can't envision the airline reducing premium cabin seating from 67 seats to 26, unless DTW-HKG was on the horizon (it isn't)...

I am flying to the US in December via Tokyo on Northwest Airlines. The ticket says we'll be on a 747-200 which means that it won't probably changed with the A330 'till early next year. The next leg on to LAX will be on a 747-400.

I'm also planning on getting a picture of it too. It will be my first flight on a
747-200.

NW Still service Ams with the 742 and I hope I will see them for a couple of days to come. I hate to see the old classics disappear.
About its replacement, I hope NW will do good and buy the 777-200 version, like KLM and even the 777-300 won't be a bad plane.....

Sorry for interrupting, but is the 747-200 service to SIN downgraded to a DC-10? When did that occur?
