Air Wales Hub + Route Expansion..

Sun Nov 16, 2003 11:21 pm

Air Wales currently have hubs at CWL, SWS and PLH...

I know they are starting operations from GLA-Galway & also a GLA-NCL-CWL route...

But is it possible Air Wales could expand it's number of hubs and it's routes?

They're not starting GLA-Galway after Aer Arran decided to launch PIK-Galway; as for new hubs, I would hope that they concentrate on building CWL so that they could acquire some 50 to 70 seaters (probably ATR72s) to operate present routes with the ATR42s used to inauguarate services.

Air Wales will not be starting the Glasgow-Galway route. Apparently Air Arann Express also had plans to start that route, and 6G accept that there is not enough capacity for 2 carriers to compete.

I expect that the Galway run was a means of using the aircraft that does the CWL-NCL-GLA route between the morning and evening rotations. I wonder what 6G will do now? I suppose that ABZ is still one of the missing former BA routes that has not been picked up by another airline. Is that a potential? Wouldn't have thought that there was a huge GLA-ABZ market.

Air Wales has recently cut its Saturday morning return flight from SWS-CWL-LCY, which is a real headache for me.

The following services will soon be inuagurated:

CWL- BRS
SWS- AMS

Keep flying the flag for CWL Chris!

Ye it's going ahead!

Yay!

My uncle is always having to travel to BRS to fly to BRU....

I really hope that Air Wales get's a few more aircraft...

I would really like them to launch services to FRA, TXL, CPH, ABZ, MAD and ZRH...

But they would have to lease some larger aircraft to do this....

Are there any BAE146 around?

They would suit 6G (Air Wales) so much...

Cambrian where you from?

Hi Chris,

I am from Cardiff- Rhiwbina to be exact, but I am currently exiled in London.

I get down to Cardiff whenever I can as all my family are there, and I recently bought a flat down there.

I am probably going to fly down next Friday evening on Air Wales from LCY.

The fare on the website is £130 return. Ouch! But it beats the M4.

Shame that they pulled the Saturday morning flight to LCY.

Where did u get that info from?

Wouldn't CWL-MAN-NCL be more profitable?

People could fly to MAN for International Connections to ORD, JFK etc..

Announced today on the Air Wales website! But they haven't got the timetable ready. I'm reserving judgment on whether CWL-LPL will work - they couldn't get CWL-MAN to work but that was when they didn't have the fixed pricing scheme in place.

Its NCL-CWL-PLY and NCL-LPL flights, not NCL-LPL-CWL.

Numbers on flights from LCY to CWL are pretty strong- normally 80% plus at weekends. Strangely, most people seem to continue on to Swansea, with only a handful of passengers alighting or boarding at CWL.

I really can't work out Air Wales pricing structure. The airline is run on the low cost model, but the fares are anything but low cost, and inflexible.

From their press release:

Welsh airline, Air Wales, today announces it is launching two scheduled domestic air services from Liverpool John Lennon Airport on December 8th.

The new daily return services – the first mainland domestic flights from Liverpool - will fly direct to Newcastle International and Cardiff International Airports, linking the city for the first time with these key business hubs in Wales and the North East. Travellers will also be able to link to Plymouth City Airport via the Newcastle flight.

I think the PAX for the CWL-NCL service should be very good but the PAX for the LPL service could depend on take up in the first few weeks and reviews...

Any opions/views?

At least they are operating decent a/c to NCL, with the ATR42, compared to the J41 that BA used to use on the route

Have to say I'm not sure that even the NCL-CWL will work. The BA J41s were lucky to go out with more than 15pax. Air Wales just seems to be fishing for what little CWL market is left. I mean, CWL-LPL and NCL-LPL with no decent business schedule, they have'nt got a hope-in-hells chance!

It looks as if 6G is trying a lot of things at once. One must think a bit seeing that it has dropped MAN and more recently Belfast City as well as the Saturday service to LCY. Is it that the Sat. service had low ridership? Certainly its (Southern) Irish routes are doing well but one hopes that it is not expanding based solely on the proven revenue from those services. EDI could be tricky as WW flies there already.

LPL could be very interesting - but would 6G ever take on one of its earlier plans, namely to provide North-South air links within Wales? There was once a plan to serve Valley (Ynys Mon or Anglesey) from Cardiff to beat the really long drive or train journey. What has come of that?

Good question, Trintocan!

If Air Wales is to be our national airline, it should offer a domestic service, either from Valley or Chester to Cardiff. I suppose that LPL serves Clwyd in a way.

I can't help thinking that if 6G couldn't make the MAN route pay, what is the chance for LPL? And who is going to take a plane from LPL to NCL?

Expansion into BRU and AMS is a no brainer, but if Air Wales is looking to consolidate, it may be viable to launch weekend flights to holiday destinations in France etc from CWL.

I also think that they should look at their fares. I am booked to fly LCY-CWL-LCY over the weekend, and it is costing me £130, and I won't even get a free drink!

OK...

Air Wales...

MY PLAN!

Stop service from Swansea and move all flights to CWL...except for 5x daily flights to CWL so Swansea passengers can connect to the Air Wales hub at CWL

Thus cutting costs...

Keep services..

CWL-DUB
CWL-ORK
CWL-LCY
CWL-BRU
CWL-JER

Start services to...

CWL-GCI (Guernsey)
CWL-SNN
CWL-GLA (IT WILL WORK)
CWL-BHD (Belfast City)
CWL-NTE (NANTES - Summer Only)

Any ideas/opinions?
