JFK To Chicago

Mon Nov 17, 2003 2:37 am

Why no n/s service between JFK and Chicago?

Well, DL does have one CRJ flight, but that's it. Has it always been this way?

I just find it a little surprising. How about you?

It's probably because most will prefer flying from LaGuardia - although the practically total absence of flights, except for that Delta CRJ, did surprise me as well...

There's almost no service from JFK to Chicago, Dallas, Toronto, Detroit, Cleveland, Denver, Houston, Minneapolis, when I say almost no service I mean less than three daily flights.

As long as Laguardia airport is operational JFK will never reach it's full potential, Jetblue has changed JFK tremendously with regards to domestic service. However Jetblue's success only hurts other carriers like AA, DL from ever establishing domestic service from JFK of any substance.

I used to fly ORD-JFK on United DC8s, there were 2 dailies in the 80s, always full too. TWA flew that route using 707s then later 727-200s. Then Pan Am flew an L1011-500 daily to connect to trans Atlantic flights. That was a very nice flight too. I preferred JFK to LGA actually and hope that JetBlue will come in to ORD before too much longer.

B6 was thinking of ORD when that rumor spread I remember hearing that AA was going to introduce 3 flights or something like that from JFK but nothing materialised.

There isn't a whole lot of need for this service. There's basically the same international options from Chicago.

With the international schedule out of Chicago, one can fly to Europe and then connect through on the same carrier to their destination, rather than travel to JFK and then change airlines.

I guess that even a market like NYC to CHI is somewhat saturated when you have around 90 flights a day to chose from...

I think there is a market for JFK service to ORD, 4-5 flights per day should work well. NYC-CHI is such a large market, that there has to be a decent amount of people who live closer to JFK, that would welcome this service. Also, though ORD does have many international flights, it still does not have another near the number of flights/destinations JFK has. Thus, you have many opportunities for connecting services.
