First Low Cost Carrier In Europe

Mon Nov 17, 2003 4:51 am

I am interested to know, which was the first low cost carrier "no frill" airline in Europe. I am guessing it would be RyanAir. Was there anyone before them?

Also, around what period did Europe see the biggest expansion in LCC's?

Ryanair started in 1985 and re-launched as LCC in 1990. As far as I know is Ryanair the first 'real' LCC in Europe.

Yes, technically Ryanair was the first, but other airlines (like Easyjet and Debonair) were the first to offer a real low cost product (ie: booking with call center and internet....)
