Aircraft Exterior Washing - How Often?

Mon Nov 17, 2003 12:30 pm

Hi All,

I guess this question is probably aimed at those working in airlines....

Just how often are the exteriors of your typical, say, narrowbody aircraft washed? Is it just after maintenance? Every month?

Would an LCC have a different approach to this than the more traditional mainline carriers?

Just curious!!

AA attempts to route each individual acft to a station that does overnight washes once every 7-10 days. Once there, if maintenance doesn't need to do repairs it should get washed prior to its next flight.

For some, you might argue not often enough!  Wink/being sarcastic

Depends on the time of year and where its flying, I know here in YLW we wash our a/c once a week in the summer and not at all in the winter. We also wash the a/c before it comes in for maintenance checks.....makes it easier to inspect the airframe.

WS has a dedicated crew in YYC which washes their aircraft - they usually do a "surface wash" every couple weeks or less with a machine washer, and then do a much more thurough "spot wash" - washing the a/c about 1 foot at a time, all by hand - every couple months.

Part of the problem with washing aircraft is that they prefer not to use water at all. I know that WS specifically does not use water to clean their aircraft, as then the water and soap gets into crevasses and can cause corrosion problems.

I don't know what Air France is doing but their aircraft are dirty. I know they fly to Guinea, Mali and Senegal… So they might pick up some dirt from there.
