Did Something Happen To SQ Today?

Mon Nov 17, 2003 3:04 pm

Hi all,

Wondering if any of you know what happened to SQ today (17/11/03).. most of its flights left SIN abt 1.5-2.5 hrs late today..

EG:
SQ192 SIN-PEN STD 0805 ATD 0946
SQ318 SIN-LHR STD 0900 ATD 1125
SQ223 SIN-PER STD 0935 ATD 1119
SQ12 SIN-LAX STD 0945 ATD 1210
SQ805 SIN-PUD STD 1015 ATD 1127
SQ110 SIN-KUL STD 1235 ATD hasnt departed at 1400
MI752 SIN-HKT STD 0855 ATD 1003

I dont think its Changi's problem cos every other airline seems to be ok.. eg
CZ352 SIN-CAN STD 0835 ATD 0846
GA975 SIN-CGK STD 0950 ATD 0958
CX736 SIN-HKG STD 1025 ATD 1043

Any ideas anybody?

Cheers

Doesn't seem like a problem specific to SQ. Looks like the entire Terminal 2 is affected. Just happens that SQ is the home airline there. Getting better now though, at around 1.00pm everything seemed to go back to normal.

Initial reports indicate that there was a major fault with ticketing system. It affected SIA ticketing worldwide.

Singapore Airlines Reservations and Check-in system went belly up, the back up system then failed. All check-in was manually done resulting in large delays. SQ018 was further delayed due to comms problems requiring an aircraft change.

Oy, yet another Cheong legacy - inadequate spending on IT and cutting corners just to save costs.

What an unfortunate incident to occur.

Singapore Airlines Limited records show the following expenditure on communications and information technology for the following financial years.

FY00/01: S$105 700 000
FY01/02: S$131 600 000
FY02/03: S$150 400 000

SIA check-in system breakdown delays several flights
By Asha Popatlal, Channel NewsAsia

SINGAPORE : Several Singapore Airlines flights at the Changi airport were delayed on Monday morning after the airline's automated check-in system malfunctioned for several hours and passengers had to be manually checked in.

Screens with "delayed" signs and long queues were what greeted SIA passengers at the airport's Terminal 2.

This was a far cry from the usual brisk check-in that travellers on SIA planes have grown accustomed to.

"I think people were just pushing. You don't know who is first," said a disgruntled passenger.

"Manual check-in. They didn't explain it," said another.

Irate passengers were seen busy calling family and business associates to explain why they would be late, while check-in staff struggled to cope.

The check-in system only came back online about two and half hours later at around 10am.

SIA, in a statement, has apologised for the inconvenience and confirmed that several SIA flights had been delayed.

The airline did not say how many flights were affected but a check on the airport website showed as many as 27 SIA and SilkAir flights were delayed by up to two hours during this period.

However, it could not be confirmed if all these delays were because of the check-in system breakdown.

Wow, Kudos to you for researching a published report.

Now, please try and articulate - in both quantitative and qualitative terms - the value-add that this IT expenditure had on the organisation. You can't, can you? Well, I can.

Before everyone starts setting up a kangaroo court to take SQ's IT dept to trial let's remember that at the end of the day computers have glitches occasionally - even in Singapore!

No matter how much money you spend on IT infrastructure, even the most redundant systems can be brought to their knees with a few simple consecutive (though highly unlikely) failures - failures which individually would be nothing more than an eyebrow raising, tea-break shortening event to the IT staff, but which together leave huge parts of a system frozen in the dark-ages.

Yes it was inconvenient, and lessons will no doubt be learned but it's hardly the end of the world - life has these little challenges, especially if you work in IT.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Regards,
Gordon.

Well it does not occur quite often so I guess.... I mean you know they're computers.

Well if SQ IT gets the fire then Heathrow engineers responsible for the radar systems would have lost their jobs!

Computer systems may have a glitch, thats what your disaster recovery plan is for... obviously SQ's DRP didnt really kick in.. perhaps they should do more testing and maintenance of their backup systems.

Tsk tsk... I can imagine all the investigations and de-briefings and "lesson learnt" discussions ala Singapore style! Computer glitches notwithstanding, the fact that the back up failed as well poses a big risk for the airline.
