A Question About Banruptcy Proctection

Tue Nov 18, 2003 7:31 am

Hey all,

I was wondering if anyone out there could help me out for a paper I am writing at school. If any of you know of a site that explains the process of filing for Chapter 11 proctection and what happens after the airline has filed such a claim. I am interested also in Air Canada process for protection.

Also, what airlines in the United States and elsewhere have filed for such protection.

Thanks so much everyone!

I don't know of any websites about Chapter 11 off hand but I am sure if you do a search you'll find some.

MANY, MANY airlines have filed for Chapter 11 protection within the United States. To list a few:

Braniff International Airlines (filed for Chapter 11 in 1982)

Continental Airlines (filed for Chapter 11 in 1983 and 1990)

Eastern Air Lines (filed for Chapter 11 in 1989)

Pan American World Airways (filed for Chapter 11 in 1991)

Trans World Airlines (filed for Chapter 11 in early 1990s and again in 2001)

America West Airlines (filed for Chapter 11 in 1991)

United Airlines (filed for Chapter 11 in early 2002)

US Airways (filed for Chapter 11 around the same time as United)

Some other airlines which have gone through Chapter 11 and been liquidated, but the specific dates escape me, are Braniff II, Pan Am 2, Vanguard, Midway, and National 2.

Each of these bankruptcies is really a story in itself, and is a fascinating part of the history of commercial aviation.
