Need Help, Transfer Time IAD

Tue Nov 18, 2003 7:10 pm

Hi folks, arriving the 1st time in the U.S. via Washington Dulles International, (IAD) from Amsterdam (KL 651), what is the recommended minimum transfer time (getting thru INS & customs, re-check in) for a connecting flight towards Dallas,TX ? Is is worth of thinking to change maybe to DCA or BWI (ground transportation?) for connecting from one of these airports towards DFW ??? I appreciate any comment, Thanks alot!
Any recommendations can be sent to: christoph.kosch@t-online.de as well.

Published Minimum Connect Times indicate that for an International to Domestic connection at IAD, the minimum connect time is 2hrs 10 minutes.

I would simply connect to an IAD-DFW flight. AA has plenty of flights that should not pose a problem for you.

If you do want to connect to another airport, make it DCA. There are more frequencies to DFW, and there is a bus that can take you straight to DCA. I don't think there is any type of direct connection service to BWI. Still, the DCA connection would be a hassle. I'd highly recommend connecting at IAD.

Plus, IAD-DFW flights are usually cheaper than DCA-DFW.

The most reliable transportation between IAD and BWI is via United Express which flies over Washington traffic. But the only airlines with non-stops from BWI are also the same airlines with non-stops from Dulles, so practically, there is no point to such an excursion.

Does United Express still fly IAD-BWI? I thought they had discontinued that route.

I'm booked on KL/NW 651 to NW 1409 IAD-DTW and they are only giving me 1 hour and 40. So is that an interline minimum at two hours ten?

Sorry, my mistake - I misread the display - I thought it was 130 minutes, but its not, its 1 hour 30 minutes - so you're OK.

I would allow three hours, just in case. They may recommend 90 minutes, but I'd rather err on the side of caution. It may take longer to get through Customs than expected, and plus you wouldn't have to feel rushed to make your connecting flight.

If your flying KLM, I would highly recommending visiting nwa.com, look for the flight schedules and download the 1st half of the flight schedule which includes minimum connection times. It will also tell you how much time you should give yourself at least 3 hours prior to departure for check in. And if your flying KLM I think you would go from AMSIADDTWDFW. If im mistaken, I'm Sorry. I too just came back from Amsterdam and checked in 4 hours prior to my flight departure...
