Canada Lifts Restrictions On Aeroflot?

Wed Nov 19, 2003 9:18 am

Any idea why Canada blinked first? Per the report below Canada has lifted restrictions it put on Russian flights, but there is nothing about Russia allowing Canada to fly over to India?

Cheers

Canada Lifts Restrictions on Aeroflot

The Moscow Times Canadian aviation officials on Tuesday lifted restrictions on Aeroflot to use its airspace for transit flights, Interfax said.

An Aeroflot official said that the airline was also allowed to resume flying to Toronto four times a week.

Canada on Nov. 1 banned Aeroflot from using its airspace for flights to the United States and reduced the airline's flight frequency to Toronto to twice weekly. The move came in retaliation to Moscow's refusal to grant Air Canada the right to transit Russia on its new daily flight from Toronto to New Delhi.

The dispute is a result of differing interpretations of India's geographical status. Ottawa has held that under its bilateral aviation agreement with Moscow, India should be considered part of the "Asia Pacific," an area Canadian airlines can service via Russian airspace. Russia contended that India is not part of the Asia-Pacific region. Negotiations regarding Air Canada's transit of Russian airspace will continue early next month.

I wonder what their motivation for this move was? Perhaps they figure that if they lift this ban on Aeroflot, Russia will allow Air Canada to overfly Russian airspace in exchange. We'll see.
