Westjet Winglets And LiveTV

Wed Nov 19, 2003 11:26 am

For anyone interested..

Aircraft 003 is getting winglets installed right now, should be in service Nov 22.
Aircraft 009 will get winglets installed right after, should be in service by Dec 1.

Aircraft 001 thru 011 have all had seat pitch modifications done.

LiveTV delayed until January.

Certainly good to see the seat mods in so quickly. I had the pleasure of flying on it a couple weeks ago, and what a HUGE difference. That extra inch or two of space is all the difference, especially on the longer YYC-YYZ runs etc. From what I hear as well, as soon as 009 gets the winglets, the rest of the fleet should see them installed VERY quickly from here on in.

Also look very much forward to seeing the LiveTV installed. I hear they put it off until January just because they couldn't afford having the aircraft out of service down in Florida during the busy Christmas rush. Makes good sense, no point having your aircraft far away when you need them most.

From what I understand, Transport Canada is standing in our way because of certification issues. We *could* have sent one aircraft down to Orlando either at the end of November or beginning of December but that aircraft would be out of service for three weeks while all the modifications, installations, and certifications were done to it. As you know, we need all of our aircraft for the busy holiday season and have set a date in January to start installations. The good news is that even though there is a delay to start installation, the target date for completion on all aircraft remains the same. Once the first aircraft has been certified, installation takes less than one week.

C-FKWS and C-GUWS
Good stuff considering I shot a picture of GUWS a few weeks back and witnessed delivery of the 003 ship.

Look forward to see them with the new winglets as well.

All the leased aircraft will be getting winglets installed first, for one week at a time (winglet installation and bridging check at the same time) starting last week with a blackout period in and around Christmas. From Jan 4 onward, installation will begin again and when all the leased aircraft have had winglets installed, our owned aircraft will be getting them installed at a rate of two per week (bridging check already completed). Also at the same time, our aircraft will be getting LiveTV installed. Its going to be a busy 2005 eh?

"Bridging Check" .... ?

If you're talking about checking it with the overwing bridges..... The wingletted -700s in WS' fleet have never used D40 in YYC (the gate with the over-wing section) since the first test, to my knowledge. The risk of putting it on that gate is apparently greater than they're comfortable with.... I'd guess since the DEW overwing bridge has apparently had some problems in the past (and continues to have a few bugs)......

I saw it land on runway 23 this afternoon. Unfortunately it turned off before getting close enough to my position by the FedEx facility for me to get a picture. Sad

Its a little confusing, but I'll try to explain it as best as I can..

We are starting a Bridging program on our -700's which adds an additional 500 hours of flight time before the aircraft has to go in for a C-check. Instead of doing all checks at once, smaller checks are done over time. All of our owned aircraft have had a bridging check in the past two months, I believe its to install some software? Get some mx work done? Sorry, not exactly my department.  Smile

As for the -700's using D40, they have. I'll send you some photos of it.

*sigh* CanadaEH, you're not reading....  Big grin

I know about the first test of 007 on bridge D40, of which you have pictures..... thanks for them by the way, but it was by no means necessary. I wasn't that far away when they were taken  Big grin

I also know they have not put that aircraft on D40 since that test.... not because it hasn't been open for use, but for other reasons.

Thanks for the update, CanadaEH . I hope WestJet adds a YUL-YWG nonstop soon too -- would round out their current sked quite nicely, I think ,for those flying to and from secondary and smaller markets out on the Prairies. A WestJet YUL-YQM flight would be appealing as well, even though CanJet already is there now.

I hope the winglet and seat placement modification sked goes smoothly in the weeks ahead, as the LiveTV retrofit thereafter as well.
