Information About Hapag Lloyd Express

Wed Nov 19, 2003 7:54 pm

Hi all,

Does anyone have information about HLX?
I'll fly them next week MRS-CGN, and I wonder how they are.
I know it's a LCC, but how are the flights, are the planes clean and most important, are they ontime?

By the way, return flight incl tax for just 39 euro!!!!

I sent my parents from HAJ to CIA on HLX, and they liked it - both flights were on time, seats were good, so nothing to complain about.

I've also had quite a few of my customers booked on HLX travelling around by now, and all of them came back happy - so I'd simply say: have a great flight!

Frank,

Thanks for the info!, I was already expecting that. Also on Ryanair I've only had good flights.
Looking forward to it!

I flew one of the first LTN-CGN HLX flights last year and the flight was great with grey leather seats. Any chance of them returning to London, perhaps LGW, where there are no direct flights to CGN or DUS?

Btw, Is there something to do at night at the airport? I leave at 06.30 it's no use to book an hotelroom for those few hours. Plan is to stay at the airport between 23.30 and 04.30 when checkin opens. I thought there were Bars open all night , no?

there´s bars open all night. there is also a lot of traffic at night, there´s more aircraft arriving between 0am and 1am than in any other hour during the day since it´s UPS´ european hub. lots of other integrators (DHL) have flights there as well. unfortunately, the visitors terrace is open only until 22pm.

HLX is just amazing. The livery is cool, good service, nice planes, real good experience. Flew some weeks ago CGN into TXL and loved it. Also the prices for Coffee or whatever are pretty ok, I think beer is somewhat expensive though.
Cabin just nice, very comfy.
Service was only good, very friendly people, on board and ground, very flexible people, not too much sticking to LCC-ways...
CGN has a nice terminal, but I couldn't spend too much time there. The investigated my notebook pretty intensively - jealousy or security?

However, don't go to check-in too early, most LCC wouldn't start more than one hour in advance. Mine were more flexible, as CGN-TXL is a pretty frequent route for them. Luggage rules are great, You can even take some bricks with You - lots of weight allowed.

Good You didn't pick Germanwings - nothing to compare...

More informations:
HLX is a sister company of leisure operator Hapag-Lloyd both owned by TUI.
Did you ever hear about GEXX, another German LCC?
Most of the HLX planes are leased from Germania, parent company of GEXX.
Other planes are older HF planes like the 737-400/500 no more longer used by HF. HLX does operational profits since Sept./oct., faster than they expected.
Over all I heard more positive than negative statements about HLX.
Enjoy it,
Greetings,Markus (FLIEGER67)

sure about they already return profits?
i know that Germanwings (4U) first profitable month was June or July but i haven´t heard any such thing about HLX. in fact, just one or two months ago there was a statement by Mr. Kurth, HLX´ CEO, that they will probably be profitable earlier than expected, but that is not to happen until 2004. i might be wrong in that, though.

HLX really seems to offer a great product since reviews and passenger surveys indicate so. however, compared to 4U, they don´t have such a high market-share and are not nearly as known to the public than 4U.
sorry, i don´t have figures, but i saw a chart this summer on seat load factors of the most important carriers with bases in Germany and HLX was experiencing loads of merely above 60%, way behind 4U, Ryanair and Lufthansa, that were all way above 70%. of course, the SLF is not the only indicator, but still it seems quite surprising.

Mr. Kurth of HLX had already knocked on Lufthansa´s doors this summer, hinting at the possibility of mering HLX and 4U, but LH turned down any such ideas (reported in either Financial Times or Handelsblatt).

i have not flown yet on either 4U or HLX, but i will do so in January and i´m really looking for to it.

Wouldn't make sense mering 4U and HLX, as LH still owns big shares of ThomasCook (Condor) which are severe competitors of TUI/HLF group.

But I read in Financial Times too, that HLX is already in the profit zone, way sooner than expected.

I can sure understand, because they treat pax about as well as regular carriers, apart from the free drinks, I actually have to say, LHs service could learn from HLX. DBA is awesome as well. I felt much better with them, than actually on 4U or LH. Don't know if it's just my oppinion.
So it's quite understandable, that they are making profit already. Oh, and sure, 4U is more known, due to more aggressive advertising, but this doesn't bring market shares yet...and still, market shares don't count, the only important is, what is under the line after the year: loss or profit...
I had some flights this September, and I picked by purpose 2 on DBA, 1 on 4U, 1 with HLX, just to try them, DBA and especially HLX rule. I also flew LH domestic in October. FR so far disappointed me totally, they have never been a serious alternative (esp. due to distance from cities...) and their way to sell tickets is just sucking. As a purchaser in the industry, I would like suppliers who offer the final price, instead of making me seek and calculate like FR does. But I'm about to start another of the classic LCC-debates...therefore stopping now...

I have flown on both Hapag-Lloyd Express and Germanwings fairly often since their launch. To be exact I have flown HLX 13 and 4U 12 times (dba 4 times).
Both of them are airlines that can be compared to the "real" airlines except that you pay for your food. So they are nowhere near the low class service that Ryanair offers (my experience: 7 flights).

Here are a few of my trip reports of these airlines:
Hapag-Lloyd Express
Germanwings

Maybe that helps...
