ANA Plans Int'l Hub At New Nagoya Airport

Thu Nov 20, 2003 5:25 am

from ATWonline:

All Nippon Airways plans to establish an international hub for its short-haul Asian routes at Chubu International Airport near Nagoya, which is scheduled to open in Feb. 2005. ANA intends to operate daily service to Seoul and Shanghai from Chubu and is considering opening routes to other parts of Asia, especially to China, in the fiscal year that begins April 1, 2005. The airline said the exact flight schedule and types of aircraft that will be used will be announced at a later date. The new airport is being constructed on a manmade island roughly 20 mi. from Nagoya. Chubu, which will take over most flights now operated to Komaki International Airport, will feature a single 11,300-ft. runway and will be capable of handling up to 20 million passengers a year. Plans call for a second runway of 13,000 ft. in the future.--LF

Question about the name of this airport...

First, it's called "Chubu", then it's "Centrair"... now it's back to being called "Chubu". WTF one is it?! Is Chubu the name of the region it's in or something?

I think that's the name of the prefecture in which the airport is located.

I heard the airport was called Central Japan International Airports. Don't really care what it's called; new Japanese airports are always worth looking forward to - good facilities for enthusiasts (and pax).

Incidentally, what's the score on the proposed new runway for Haneda?

Yes it's the name of the region. Osaka area is called Kansai. Tokyo area is called Kanto, and Nagoya area is called Chubu.

"Centrair" is just a fancy English nickname they came up with for the airport.

"Chu" means middle/center/inside "bu" means part/section. 中部
I wonder if the landing fees at this airport will be as outrageous as they are at Narita and KIX.

I wonder what the impetus is here. I think the stated reason is to serve the auto industry around Nagoya. (Virtually all have plants in China and SE Asia).

But if JAL does not follow ANA into the market (standard competitive response), that could be interpreted to mean that some non-economic reasons were behind ANA's decision.

Just an FYI, Nagoya is in Aichi Prefecture.

I thought Nagoya was in Gifu prefecture...? Is the airport that far away?

At any rate, this is great news! Hopefully ANA will give more options to USA-Nagoya travelers.

I look forward to visiting the airport in a few years.
