Looking For Somewhere To Spot In Europe...

Fri Nov 21, 2003 11:40 pm

Where would you recommend for a short spotting trip (a day or two) in Europe in January? I would normally choose between AMS, DUS, FRA, ZRH or GVA, but won't in this instance because of the (almost certain) awful weather.

So - somewhere warm.

Also, I'd like it to be quite busy, either with a variety of airlines and aircraft or not.

I won't have a car so somewhere I can spot in (airside or landside) or close to the terminal is needed.

Cheers.

Palma De Majorca sounds like a pretty good plan and quick, easy and cheap to get to with low cost airlines from most UK airports. The weather should be OK i'm guessing and you'll see a pretty wide range of airlines and aircraft even though its the winter season. If you pick any major Spanish airport, say Madrid or Barcelona i'm sure you'll have a great few days although not sure about the spotting facilities there.

Could always go further a field to the Canary Islands but travelling all that way and back for just a day or two may be a bit much.

NCE is usually sunny in January, and spotting is pretty good down the Promenade end of the runway, or the elevated parking at T2. Right close to downtown Nice too (you can walk it), and fares on Squeazyjet in January are usually excellent. Get some interesting EuroLCC's and the odd VERY expensive VIP eg. Saudi Royal 744, BBJ's etc.

Cheers for your replies.

Demoose - I've been to MAD three or four times. The spotting (but perhaps not photography) is good from within the terminals, either airside or landside. Add to this a number of small Spanish aircraft, albeit mostly in IB colours, then it's quite interesting.

Yep, very, very true JGPH1A!!! Same goes for AMS, DUS, GVA, ZRH....... ah well.

Just booked LPL-MAD-LPL, leaving on 15/1 and arriving back 16/1. It cost £49.98 including tax. Big grin

I don't think they've finished the ground transportation links to ATH yet - you can only travel there by mule.
