Philippine Airlines Routes

Sun Nov 23, 2003 5:22 am

Will Philippine Airlines resume any of it’s former routes, for whatever reason be it bankruptcy, or be it re-organization they have lost a lot of very good routes.

Some of the discontinued destinations have included-

Athens
Frankfurt
London
Newark
Paris
Rome

Any news would be very greatly appreciated!

There are no immediate plans to resume the European routes. Emphasis is on regional services and North America.

Amsterdam was also discontinued in the early 90's

unfortunately Europe is probably currently last priority in the network.

I wish they open a route to Beijing.

Currently PR only flies to HKG, PVG, and Xiamen and of course TPE, for its Chinese routes. I wish they added Beijing.

oh LAS will be added within the next few months. I think it will be march 04 if things go well.

I hope they open EWR and ORD in the future too.

When did they fly to EWR? It would be great to see an Asian Carrier in EWR. I think the only one that currently flies to EWR right now is MH, if you want to consider that Asia.

COEWRNJ,

PAL flew to Newark in the mid-1990's. They at the time were using MD-11 aircraft that were leased from World Airways as they were awaiting the arrival of the new A340-300 aircraft. If memory serves correct the service flew via Vancouver or San Francisco and then continued into Manila!

They flew to EWR with MD-11's leased from World Airways when they where downgraded to category 2 by the FAA in the Late 90's. The route was MNL-YVC-EWR.

This route was supposedly operated by the Brand New A340 they ordered however again due to the cat-2 they where not able to. EWR was discountinued during the strike the airline incurred by the pilots a couple of years back, together with its London flights and other routes. Basically the whole airline closed down and fleet was cut as well as the network.

Malaysia is definitely in Asia. Singapore Airlines also flies to EWR via AMS 5x weekly.

PAL needs some new long haul aircraft if they really want to expand their North American/European network. With only 4 744s and 4 A343s, that fleet is already utilized at maximum with two daily flights to the mainland USA and 5x weekly to Vancouver plus the high density short haul routes (Cebu, Hong Kong etc)

Sorry completely forgot about Singapore at EWR. EWR also has EVA to TPE via SEA. Does anayone think EWR will ever see JAL or ANA? Will Korean ever be back? It would be great to see more of an Asian presence at EWR.

With JFK so close by and the premier airport for most International airlines for the NY area, EWR will probably just have a few.

PRs new route to LAS VEGAS is on an B 744 MNL-YVR-LAS with full pax rights between Vancouver-Las Vegas-Vancouver and its going to be 3 weekly flights!!!

SQ discontinued LAS due to SARS problems so this has given PR a chance to take pax from there to HKG-SIN-BKK-CHINA and KUL-Australia.

The airline, while during its heyday in the 60s, was Asia's first airline. The decline started to creep in I guess sometime from the early 80s / late 70s. Corruption is the keyword that we are dealing with here and the airline struggled along throughout the decades. Stories were abound about how the First Family (Marcos) frequently chartered planes at the last minute for shopping trips to Europe, throwing their ops schedules into disarray.

Couple that with disgruntled unions perpetually on strike, not surprising PAL (nicknamed "Plane Always Late") got left behind in the shadows while her peers in the region soared to the skies. In 1986, a new livery was introduced with new coporate slogans "Shining Through" with hopes that the airline would pull out of the doldrums. Not only did the airline not pull out of it, the strike in Sept 1998 crippled the airline and forced it to cease ops.

The airline continues to exist today, albeit much smaller than it was before. Hopefully this lean "new" airline will help it to be profitable, similar to what it did for Garuda Indonesia that downsized tremendously after the 97 financial crisis.
Welcome to my starry one world alliance, a team in the sky!

Back in the 80's, 85 or 86 PAL flew a 747-200 on a ORD-HNL-MNL routing. Not sure when it was discontinued. It would be great to have them back as there is a sizeable Philippine population the Midwestern US.

7Seas:

yes the ORD-HNL-MNL was operated very shortly though. probably only a couple of weeks. It was discontinued due to low pax.

Yes there are a lot of Filipino's in the mid western US but I think what PR wants is to have 5th freedom rights from HNL. They want to be able to fly from HNL to guam and to other destinations in the mainland.

Behramjee:

The route to LAS will not be operated by a 744 but will be operated by a A340 as stated by their website.

also they will recieve there 5th B744 on the first week of December. That was according to their website too.

I believe they are already allowed to fly beyond the philippines.

Ie CO NW if they wished could pick up pax at MNL and continue on to lets say SIN or any where.

this was from the open skies agreement that was delayed to help PR re-establish itself, but now has been implemented. PR is unhappy, and that it wants 5th freedom rights too.

Might as well add another 744 as PR will hopefully be taking delievery of it next month. Its a former Canadian/AC bird (C-FGHZ) and its all painted and waiting in Marana as we speak.

One interesting fact, C-FGHZ was one of the other four 744s destined to PR but instead went to different airlines (N755PR went to SA as ZS-SBK, N756PR went to NZ as ZK-SUJ....the 744 with the latest LOTR c/s, N757PR to SA as ZS-SBS, and N758PR to Dubai Air Wing / Abu Dhabi Amiri Flight as A6-YAS). This was the original N754PR, the current one that is in PR's fleet was not part of the original order and was destined to be N759PR. Well at least this 744 is going back to its supposed original operator.  Big thumbs up
