DOT Approves US Airways / Spanair Codeshare

The DOT approved US Airways's codeshare with Spanair, a member of the Star Alliance.

US Airways will place its US code on Spanair flights between MAD and BCN, AGP, PMI.

Spanair will place its JK code on PHL-MAD and on flights between PHL and ATL, BOS, BWI, DCA, DEN, DFW, IAH, LAS, LAX, LGA, MCO, MIA, MSP, MSY, ORD, PHX, PIT, SAN, SEA, SFO, SJU.
I'm the expert on here on two things, neither of which I care about much anymore.

This is very good news for added more expansion codeshare from Spanair. Those codeshare will going on by their flight from MAD, BCN, AGP and PMI. How much whole codeshare are doing now?

This has nothing to do with a possible merger between UA and US but everything to do with US' upcoming entrance into the Star Alliance. When US enters Star, their PHL-MAD flight will provide the only transatlantic non-stop Star flight between N. America and Spain.

Does anyone think that in the future it could be advisable for US to open up other routes between the US and MAD from somewhere other than PHL? While I hate to add gasoline to the fire that is the whole US/UA merger topic, what about operating some international routes from ORD, such as one to MAD since the only ORD-MAD flight is on IB, and some vacation flights to the Caribbean and Mexico since MX will be leaving soon?

I think that US would start PHL-BCN before considering adding another gateway to MAD.

I think if they were to add another MAD flight, it would be CLT-MAD. CLT does offers some connecting opportunities that PHL doesn't, including some of the smaller Florida markets and some Caribbean/Latin America destinations (although many of them are not timed to connect with European flights).

And I think that if US were to start flying transatlantic routes from a nonhub airport, it would be BOS and not ORD. BOS is at least a focus city for US. They've run BOS-FRA in the past. They want to run BOS-LHR. (When pigs fly...) And there've been rumors about BOS-DUB once the SNN rule is eliminated. US has also announced several Caribbean routes from BOS: CUN, SJU, NAS, MBJ, AUA, BDA.

One important thing to consider is that US does not have any spare heavy lift at the moment. The summer schedule is 13x PHL-Europe (LGW x2, CDG x2, MAD, MAN, AMS, FRA, MUC, FCO, DUB, SNN, GLA), 2x CLT-Europe (LGW, FRA), and 1x PIT-Europe (FRA). That's 16 flights, and US currently has 19 widebodies (9x 333, 10x 762). The summer schedule uses 8x 333 and 8x 762. They could get away with another 762 flight; 2 more would be really pressing their luck.
